Hi all, would anyone have any advice or experience on the timing of applying for Canadian PR while a work permit application is in process? I will outline our situation.
I am a Canadian citizen who has lived and worked in the UK for several years but I will be moving back to Canada in a few months to start a new job. My husband, a British citizen, also has a job in Canada and has applied for a work permit. We have been married for five years and we will be working in Canada from July. According to the IRCC site he is also able to apply for permanent residency from the UK (before we move to Canada) if I sponsor him to apply (family sponsorship, outside of Canada). We have read through a lot of the information from IRCC and have not found anything preventing him from submitting an application for PR now, even though he has already applied for the work permit.
So my questions:
(1) Would it jeopardise his chances of getting the work permit if he submitted the application for PR before the work permit were issued, and before we move to Canada?
(2) Should we wait until the work permit is confirmed and submit the PR application just before we leave? Or should we wait until we are in Canada?
The advantage of submitting the PR application now is that we have all the relevant documentation to hand. As there is some overlap with the work permit requirements (police report, medical examination etc) it could be easier, quicker and cheaper. If we were to wait until we arrive in Canada, we could apply via the spousal route but there would a period of settling into our new lives and work, time to gather new documents and fulfil the requirements from within Canada, at extra cost.
Sorry for the long message but thought it would help to provide a clear picture. Thanks in advance!
