I believe that chances of rejection at the level of Visa office is minimal based on sponsorship eligibility..They can reject if they suspect that relation is not genuine or the principle applicant ( if called for interview) can not show required documents( asked by VO) to prove the relation with her/his sponsor..

Practically speaking the visa officer located at the office in particular country is not goin to check back the eligibility of the sponsor..they are pretty busy with checking genuineness of the relation between sponsor and principle applicant rather than checking if the sponsor is still working or eligible for the sponsorship.

Legally speaking -- A sponsor needs to be working or not be on any social assistance if not working throughout the period of sponsorship.

A friend called me ystdy morning, she was freaking out cos her husband was called by the VO to come for his visa. When he got there, the VO brought up an issue about the sponsor having received funding from the AB govt for school. He didnt knw much about that, so they called her on the phn. Bottom line: he was asked to return and that they will get back to him after they have verified that this funding is not considered as welfare. They did not take his passport.

And this is after several months of processing time! They decide to verify this NOW!!?? So frustrating.

Its actually not a loan. Its just some sort of free funding the govt gives to upgrade one's education. I never even heard of it until ystdy but it doesnt sound like welfare to me either. My friend is soo distressed cos she said she verified with the govt about this be4 she applied for this funding. I hope the VO comes back with good news for her soon.

It's too bad about your friend. It shows that even when we try to find out ahead of time whether this or that will affect our case, the fact is the various government departments and their employees don't necessarily know.

Usually educational funding is not considered welfare, but sometimes there are cases where the names are confusing. For example, in Saskatchewan, welfare can include something that is called a training allowance, and the welfare department will pay for educational upgrades. Unfortunately, this is still considered welfare.

Wow! Thanks for the info.
Now, I am definitely getting worried for my friend. I hope her's is not considered welfare. She is going crazy with worry with each passing day that the VO does not contact them. I will not be giving her this new info I just learnt from you though, Canadianwoman ::) only cos I think she might just loose it from worry. She is not doing so well with this delay and everyone around her is trying to get her to relax and think positive.

Yes, I wouldn't tell her. She very well might be getting something that is perfectly OK, so why worry her? Every province has different forms of assistance as well.

I received funding from the AB government for school while applying to sponsor my husband. It is not welfare, at least what I was on. It is called Alberta Works, and is an EI funded program, NOT welfare. If you have been working in Alberta and are eligible for EI, plus meet some other requirements, you are eligible for Alberta Works.

My husband landed a couple of weeks ago....so there is proof that it is an acceptable form of funding!!
