You both should file although he has no income, It will give you extra benefits for the fact that you're married
He definitely has ties in canada as he has OWP and lives with his wife here. So he is a resident for the tax purposes. He can also get some GST back and other benefits for health insurance if you live in a province where you pay for it.

IT's not that hard. I use simpletax.ca . It can link both of your accounts and does everything for you

Thank you! That also was my reasoning when considering my options. I usually use a tax software like turbo tax for my own filings, but I was not at all sure how complicated it would be given his situation.

Me and my husband, did taxes together last year and he makes more than me plus even cra knew too since my hubby who I am sponsoring makes more than me. We did together since 2015

Last year (2015) I was able to claim the wife as a dependant. The taxable deduction was like $11,500. They allowed the deduction, despite her landing in Canada in September, and Marriage in June.

When I spoke to my dad about it, he suggested that it's probably a sliding scale, because, yes they were dependant to a certain extent, but that would be offset against the amount they eventually earned. This is old-school CRA, so take it with a grain. That said, I should be able to let every one know in a couple wks when our accountant submits our 2016 returns.

11g! Well my goodness, if I get anything close to that its going right into our house fund. I will definitely be filing for him then, I just wasn't sure what the expectation was given the circumstances. The extra they will probably get us will help with that stupid extension of work permit application I need to file on Monday. ::)

Thank you for the note !
I was eyeing an entity like Softtron to file for us this year, my t4 isn't here yet so I still have time to decide what I will file with

My wife hadn't filed yet. So, CRA held my return for pre-processing. Speaking to the CRA processor on the phone, I explained the situation, and asked "What can I send you for proof".

- Passport Scan with the Canadian *wisa* + the entry stamp
- Marraige Certificate
- Letter outlining what we discussed.
- Good measure I included a copy of her temporary SIN so they knew the filing has happened.

Two weeks later, a mega return showed up.

It was worth $11000, Carol... Would you call them?

BTW when you get a pre-processing review warning letter -- you have a number that reaches the person who evaluates the claim. It's the person with the finger on the button. Was totally easy. No joke.

ugh

they already knew about their plan for this though, so they shouldn't be able to use that as an excuse again

I gave an example how to calculate. I think it might be sooner than that :)
