We do feel like we might waste the $255 if we apply too early : It would save us a lot of stress if we can simply apply before the current one expires.

Given that you are jan 2016...i agree hold off. Unless you have dependents you'll probably hear well before July.

So I am looking through previous posts and Profiler has talked about this a few times, but we applied Nov 2 2016 and the BGC status was just updated to In Progress. If I am reading correctly, that really doesn't mean anything, and I shouldn't get excited that they are working on our application. Is that a fair assessment?

That is a pretty fair assessment yes....BUT all updates are reasons to celebrate. BGC is one of the first stages of review. It will be like that for some time, which is why it's not the most exciting thing. I'm a Dec. 1, 2015 applicant and mine has been that way for a year now....but they are working to speed it up....so it shouldn't be that long for you.
