No. If you see it closely there are 3 different description after "IN PROCESS"

My understanding (may be incorrect) was that the first and second items from your list are essentially the same.
"The next step is to conduct a background check." used to be the message displayed by old system (MYCIC has gone through recent updates) and "Your application is in progress. We will send you a message when we start your background check." is just the new ways of CIC saying the same thing.
Again, I could be wrong.

Mine says:
We are processing your background check. We will send you a message if we need more information.
And it has been like that for the past 9 months. So does it mean they started it?

I agree but FYI mine changed only once so far
it was "YOUR APPLICATION IS IN PROGRESS, THE NEXT STEP IS TO CONDUCT BACKGROUND CHECK" then it changed to "WE ARE PROCESSING YOUR BACKGROUND CHECK, WE WILL SEND YOU A MESSAGE IF WE NEED MORE INFORMATION" before I got PPR.

Background status changed on 5 or 6 Jun and got PPR on 20th Jun.

Today my MyCiC Background check status changed from "YOUR APPLICATION IS IN PROGRESS, THE NEXT STEP IS TO CONDUCT BACKGROUND CHECK" to "WE ARE PROCESSING YOUR BACKGROUND CHECK, WE WILL SEND YOU A MESSAGE IF WE NEED MORE INFORMATION". And in ECAS my parents PR status changed to "DECISION MADE". I hope this is a sign we are getting PPR soon

I got email, FYI photo spec is changed recently (The original information was shared by sylvia27), that save some time for us.
they asked us only 3 things 1) the email 2) Passport and 3) pictures.

Hi, could you please help me in linking my application. I have read many post but still no success. All posts says that leave city/ town of birth empty and just hit spacebar once but it ask me to fill it and that tab turns red in colour. My mother in law got her medical done in March 2017. Just wanna see if they have started background check

My parents have recieved a letter from cic asking about my brothers social situation and his plans to stay on in india. His current address is same as my parents. But he was not a dependent in their application.
I am not sure what they want us to send them? His work address or property in his name? He is currently separated from his wife, no kids.
My parents medical was in august last year.
