Hi,

can someone please let me know what is the process if I would like to sponsor my brother-in-law for PR in manitoba?

After getting PR do we need to stay in Manitoba for 1 year? I am already staying in manitoba from past 2 years so question is do I need to stay after getting PR or prior stay period is also counted?

i don't believe that you can sponsor any siblings, regular or inlaw. i believe he would need to find another way to immigrate. as far as i know the only family members eligible for sponsorship are spouses, parents and children.

yes - as a PR, you would need to be residing in canada during any sponsorship you pursue. if you are asking if you have to reside in canada to keep your pr status, i believe the answer is no. there is a certain number of days you must reside in canada, otherwise you can live somewhere else. i'm sure a senior member will provide more detailed information about that rule, or where to find it.

interesting, so this seems like a good route for people in that area to bring non-eligible family members over to canada? thanks for the info!

Any prior stay before getting PR will not count towards the PR status residency requirement to maintain it. The only time prior stay are counted are for Canadian citizenship qualification. These are counted as half days towards the citizenship qualification. However due to upcoming change to Canadian citizenship laws if passed, time stayed in Canada prior to getting PR will not be counted.

You would be better off asking these questions in the Provincial Nomination section of this forum.

Yes, the PNP loophole often used as an entry way for people who don't easily qualify for other categories. Many times people leave the province shortly afterwards. So far they have not been cracking down on this (though to be honest it would be hard for CIC to prove intent)

See http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/-t204201.0.html

The sponsor could be blacklisted...

True. But I can't recall a case where they actually did crack down on someone abusing the program..

I've seen a handful of cases in the PNP section of the forum where sponsors were refused further sponsorship because someone they sponsored earlier didn't meet the conditions of their sponsorship (e.g. remaining in the province).

They don't seem to crack down at all on people who apply independently through PNP and then leave the province shortly after landing. However they do seem to take action against those who sponsored others by blacklisting them from sponsoring others.

so can an every day citizen sponsor someone through PNP?

Eligibility section says below one :
Provide documentation showing they currently reside and are established in Manitoba, and have been living in the province for at least one year
Be a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident

Based on the above eligibility criteria I should be able to sponsor my brother-in-law after getting PR correct? Is it really necessary to stay in Manitoba for 1 year after getting PR?

Again, you need to post your questions in the Provincial Nomination section of this forum since you are asking a question specifically related to a PNP program.

This section of the forum is used to discuss family sponsorships through the Federal program (not PNP).
