This is not a proper subject for here. If you want to sponsor and care for your family then do so at your expense, prove you can afford to do this and in all likelyhood your family can join you. The people of Canada and our Government are not in a position to pay for your wants. It is kind enough that they even allow spousal reunification.

VOTE CONSERVATIVE!!!!!!

Almost every country in the world allows immigration on family grounds. I say almost because i want to be on the safe side but iM sure that every country in the world allows that

there is no question of "allowing" spousal reunification. you or your parents/grand-parents/grand-grand-parents probably came this way too. canada is a country built on immigration and spousal sponsorship is a very natural way of bringing someone into this wonderful country.

canadian citizens have a right to marry a foreigner and bring him/her here if they wish. there is no minimum income requirement for sponsoring your spouse and rightly so. gov't has no business in people's personal affairs.

Agree up to the bold part - If you want to immigrate to Canada the government clearly does have "business in people's personal affairs".

I think that you'd find that 5 years wait for parental reunification and some rather, *ahem* lenient practices at the border for most spouses coming to "visit" are on the "good" side, world-wide.

There's nothing prohibiting these people from immigrating -- but if they can't support themselves and immigrate through normal channels, they just have to wait.

The Conservatives haven't done anything wrong here... and I'd hasten to say that it's unlikely the Liberals would do anything better, unless it was just to spite the Tories.

How about NDP?
Looking at the link, I see the NDP is still demanding/promising more services (buying more votes from those who stand to gain, at the expense of those who pay the taxes). Big government never works in the long run. The bureaucracy grows to the point where it consumes most of your tax dollars, and services to the public become unaffordable.

To say you won't vote for a certain party because they don't offer you the one thing you want most, and forget to look at the bigger picture (what's good for the country?) is to be a poor citizen. It is said that people get the government they deserve, and it is usually not for the better.

the laws "help keep our population under control"
that's the most ridiculous statement i've read on these forums!

Maybe, but not based on any argument you've presented so far. I'd love to hear your reasons so I can decide intelligently for myself.

the purpose of sponsorships is FAMILY REUNIFICATION - it is not to keep those who wish to abuse the system out. once the immigration dept looses focus, the main purpose goes down the drain and the goal then becomes to catch the "bad guys" (probably < 10%) and the hell with the rest (genuine cases - probably 90%+).

Really? I thought the purpose was twofold: to reunite GOOD families, and keep out BAD families. Where did you read that the only purpose is reunification? That would be a very simple and quick process: simply automatically admit the outside family members. Forget police reports, since protecting Canadians against criminals is not part of the purpose. No need for medicals since protecting Canadians against dangerous diseases is also not part of the purpose.

This would make Canada the target of all sorts of human dross, and not a very nice safe place to live.

I'm voting conservatives. I plan to send my vote in. One policy doesnt make a party good for power.

Conservatives as a whole serve better what I want to see in Canada. And seriously...immigration laws need to be tough. Its hard to be in the shoes of wanting your spouse or family in Canada....and its hard to have to go through so much red tape. But you have to look at the bigger picture. The government doesn't know you personally....so while their laws might make it sucky for any one of us...they also protect us from those who would use and abuse the system.

And if the system becomes a free for all....Canada won't be such a great place to live. The laws protect us from those that shouldn't be immigrating to Canada for various reasons....as well as people abusing the system. They also help keep our population under control.
nice post

Frankly I see no difference between the Conservatives and Liberals these days. What I think has worked is having a minority government in power. Fewer excesses, and definitely a tendency to govern to the centre. Just as the last Liberal government led to scandal and waste, the last Conservative majority did exactly the same thing. They all promise the Earth and Sun but are just so many pigs at the trough. As for that list of immigration-related promises in the current campaign, half of them are essentially invalidated by claiming to improve the recognition of foreign credentials etc -- that's all provincial jurisdiction and as such out of the hands of any federal party.

I am pretty surprised at the level of support the Liberals still receive. They are pretty close to the NDP in policy it seems these days and really could Canada afford to have the modern Day Bob Rae in power, I don't think that Ontario ever fully recovered from that.

But it seems to my POV that the Conservatives are the least likely to turn Canada into a 100% nanny state.. I don't know about reversing the current level but standing still would be somewhat of a relief.

I came to the realization the other day that standing still this past decade at least in income vs expenses would have been a huge plus. My salary's the same as it was ten years ago but the price of gold for instance has gone up over three times from $CA400 to $CA1500 during the same period. As far as I am concerned, all of the current parties are refusing to lead, refusing to present strategy, and instead are arguing over the best ways of worsening our financial situation. The Conservatives have brought back federal deficits but in regard to the nanny state, I almost get the sense that if they got their act truly together and wiped out all debt that half the economy would be snuffed in the effort. We've long since gone past the point of being able to extract government spending from real productivity.

I plan to vote Green. Perhaps I'm a sucker for lost causes* but it seems to me that there's at least a voice that can look past next week. I think the current minority government does a good job because it's kept in balance. And let's not kid ourselves about the Conservatives being conservative. The orgy of spending they indulged in to keep the union gigs at the auto makers going would have embarrassed the NDP. And I find it noteworthy that not only has Harper broken his long-standing vow to make the Senate accountable, he's actually used his many appointees to that Senate to kill legislation passed by the elected lower house. Something that hasn't happened since the 1930's.

*I put in a request for a lawn sign on their website two weeks ago but they couldn't be bothered.
