Hello,

My spouse and I (both 30+) got married in May 2018 and we are looking to get the sponsorship taken care of very soon (it’s taken a while to collect documents).

The confusing part for me is that we have an official address in Ontario but it is a bit out of town from Ottawa so we are also renting and living in Gatineau (near both our schools in Ottawa and good rent prices). We have been in Gatineau less than a year. We both have Ontario ID and drivers license, I have OHIP, etc.

Will this require us to seek approval to have my spouse immigrate to Quebec? My intention was to have them immigrate to Ontario since that’s where I intend to reside for the foreseeable future, where I pay taxes, etc. and where we will be once we move out from where we are staying in Gatineau.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I’m concerned about applying and getting refused if it’s too “complicated” and I’d rather not wait until we move since we’ve already paid a lot for criminal record check in origin country etc.

Thanks!

As far as the government knows, you're resident in Ontario, however I'm not confident in anything about this. I suppose that as long as you intend to live in Ontario, you're probably in the clear - will your application mailing address reflect the Ontario address?

Hi monkeys89,

Yes, as far as they know we are in Ontario (and indeed as far as I'm concerned we are as well, especially since I am not using Quebec health services etc. and am not here long term).

I am not super clear on what my mailing address *should* be in this case. Whether to put Gatineau in mailing, and current address Ontario or vice versa.
My primary concern would be if CIC wants to visit my home, they would not be going to Ontario since our stuff is here in Gatineau. The room we have in Ontario is at my parents house, whereas we have our own apartment in Quebec.

I'd like this to be the least complicated as possible and I'm not sure how sticky they are on these details.

You may want to contact a professional for advice on this one. Your official address is in Ontario, but you may be misrepresenting yourselves if you fail to declare a Quebec address.
