Quebec tornadoes cause millions in damage
2 twisters touch down northwest of Montreal
CBC News Posted: May 26, 2012 9:14 AM ET
Last Updated: May 26, 2012 10:31 PM ET

Environment Canada has confirmed that two tornadoes — one of which was classed as a moderate F-1 packing winds of up to 150 km/h — touched down near Montreal Friday night, causing millions of dollars in damage.

Meteorologist René Héroux from Environment Canada said the F-1 tore through St-Benoît-de-Mirabel.

The two twisters landed within 15 minutes of each other and about 35 kilometres apart, smashing windows, ripping trees from their roots and destroying rooftops in several communities near Montreal.

The damage on Friday was mostly confined to a rural area, Héroux said, adding that there were no injuries.

Environment Canada said the first of the tornadoes to strike was a lighter F-0 twister, which brought gusts of up to 120 km/h and laid waste to parts of Brownsburg Chatham around 8 p.m. About 10 farming areas were hardest hit.

The Fujita scale runs from F-0 to F-5. The scale rates the severity of tornadoes by the damage they cause.

200-year-old brick church levelled

On Friday, up to seven homes in St-Benoît-de-Mirabel felt the brunt of the stronger of the two tornadoes.

The 200-year-old Grand Fresniere Presbyterian church collapsed in the storm, while pieces of metal from a farm’s silo were ripped off and dropped half a kilometre away.

The high winds toppled hydro poles, leaving many residents without power.

At the height of the storm, 30,000 Hydro-Québec customers were without power. Thirty-four crews were out throughout the night and, by 7 a.m. ET, power had been restored to all but 2,000 homes and businesses.

By noon, that number had been reduced to around 700. Marie-Noël Lacroix of Hydro Quebec said they expected all power to be restored by the end of the day.

Mirabel Mayor Hubert Meilleur told Radio-Canada the damage could reach several millions of dollars. If the areas are designated disaster zones, he said he would consider asking the province for funding help.

Both tornadoes were Quebec's first of the season. The province typically sees about six twisters a year, usually between June and August, and rarely ever more severe than an F-1.

Tornado classifications
Intensity Wind speed Type of damage
F0 64-116 km/h Damage to trees, shingles, antennas and windows.
F1 117-180 km/h Trees uprooted, cars overturned.
F2 181-252 km/h Roofs blown off homes, sheds destroyed, mobile homes flipped
F3 253-330 km/h Walls, roofs destroyed, metal buildings collapsed, forests destroyed.
F4 331-417 km/h Well-built homes mostly destroyed, heavy objects thrown long distances.
F5 418-508 km/h Homes destroyed and/or blown great distances, roofs blown off larger structures, which are otherwise heavily damaged

Hi Folks,

I am really sorry, if my earlier post has made you think otherwise,

for those who are saddened by my previous post....

here is one great positive post I want to share with all quebec applicant...

there is so much to cheer about Quebec and most importantly about its JOB MARKET... :)

There are plenty of job opportunities in many occupations and fields in Quebec. :)

read on the full post on this link:
http://www.cicnews.com/2011/08/growing-job-market-future-quebec-081062.html

With a Growing Job Market, Your Future May Be In Quebec
August, 2011

From now to 2015, the province of Quebec is planning to admit 50,000 new immigrations each year from over 100 countries. Individuals who are thinking of settling in Quebec will want to know about employment opportunities in the province. According to a study done by the Université de Montréal, a significant majority of immigrants selected as workers found a job that corresponds to their qualifications within five years of being admitted to Quebec. This is encouraging news as Quebec employers are requesting that the Quebec government accept more immigrants to the province to make up for the loss of Canadian workers that are retiring.

Where are the most employment opportunities in Quebec?

In general, Quebec's overall labour market is favourable, but the Montreal region in particular is known for having employment opportunities across a wide range of industries. Because of this, a majority of foreign individuals choosing to settle in Quebec live in the Montreal region.

According to the Canadian government's labour forecasts, there are several employment sectors in Montreal that will be experiencing particularly strong growth, such as information and technology sectors, health and science fields, and the tourism industry. The following are a few examples of occupations that are expected to have the highest rate of job growth within the coming years:

Information and Technology

Montreal is home to several large computer and video gaming corporations such as Electronic Arts, UbiSoft, and Softimage and the following are a few occupations are in demand for those industries:

• Information Systems Analysts and Consultants
• Web Designers and Developers
• Computer Network Technicians
• Computer Programmers and Interactive Media Developers

Business & Finance

• Financial auditors and accountants
• Professional occupations in business services to management
• Bookkeepers

Health and Medical

Canada's population is quickly aging resulting in a greater demand for health services. As such, the need of individuals who work in the medical field is particularly high for the following occupations:

• Specialist Physicians
• Biologists and related scientists
• General Practitioners and Family Physicians
• Dentists
• Pharmacists
• Physiotherapists
• Licensed Practical Nurses

Tourism Industry

With hundreds of festivals held annually, Montreal and Quebec City welcome millions of tourists from around the world, resulting in a high demand for employees in the following occupations:

• Accommodation Service Managers
• Food Service Supervisors
• Cooks
• Food and Beverage Servers

Occupations in Education

Montreal is home to several renowned universities and colleges, such as McGill University, the John Molson School of Business, and the Université de Montreal. As such, job opportunities in the educational field are constantly growing:

• University Professors
• College and Other Vocational Instructors
• Administrators – Post-secondary Education and Vocational Training

Other Occupations in High Demand

• Butchers, Meat Cutters and Fishmongers – Retail and Wholesale
• Electrical Mechanics
• Aircraft Assembly Inspectors
• Construction Managers
• Civil Engineers

A job offer from a Quebec employer is not required when applying for Canadian Permanent Residency through the Quebec Skilled Worker Program. Contrary to the Federal Skilled Worker Program, applicants in the Quebec Skilled Worker Program are not required to have work experience in a qualifying occupation. Computer programmers, engineers, accountants, and those in other occupations can all apply through this program.

You're welcome

I found some information that may interest you

Can I apply for Permanent Resident status and temporary status (Work Permit/Study Permit/Temporary Resident Visa) at the same time?

You can apply for Permanent Resident status and Temporary status at the same time. Canadian Immigration policy recognizes the concept of dual intent.

Dual Intent

Dual Intent refers to the concurrent processing of an application for Permanent Residence and an application for Temporary Status, therefore demonstrating the intention to both reside in Canada permanently and only temporarily, at the same time.

Although this may appear contradictory at first glance, in fact it is possible. Imagine, for example, the following scenario:

An individual submits an application for a Canada Immigration Visa. Before receiving the Canada Immigration Visa, the individual wishes to visit Canada for a short time and applies for a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), or appears at the Port of Entry, if a national of a TRV (visa exempt country). This is perfectly acceptable as long as the individual intends to leave Canada at the end of the visit.

The same principle applies to individuals who are in the process of applying for a Canada Immigration Visa and wish to obtain a temporary Work Permit or Study Permit.

An individual whose application for Permanent Residence in Canada is pending is subject to the same requirements as others when seeking entry into Canada temporarily. The individual should therefore have a reasonable purpose for entry, be prepared to leave Canada at the end of the temporary stay and understand that if a Canada Immigration Visa is issued, he or she must leave and re-enter Canada in order to officially land as a Permanent Resident.

An application for Temporary Status may be scrutinized more closely when a Permanent Resident application is under review, as there is an obvious intention to settle in Canada permanently. If the individual's ties elsewhere can be demonstrated, however, an application for Temporary Status should succeed.

This information was taken from the FAQ list at the following link under "introduction to Canada" http://www.canadavisa.com/canadian-immigration-faq.html

This list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) is very comprehensive to assists most questions that anyone may have.

So based on the above I conclude you can apply for your CSQ and while it is in queue, one can temporarily move to Canada to read for a degree. Two possibilities exist. 1) If your status changed to permanent residenct while studying you will still have to leave and return to officially land as a permanent resident. when this happens you will be eligible to pay reduced tuition fees. 2) If your status does not change to permanent resident while studying at the end of your temporary study visa you will have to leave Canada.

Hope this helps
