Okay.

Qorax,

If I take a bank statement that says i have Rs 5,40,000 which is equal to $10000 in my bank account in India.
Will they accept that?

No.
However, it's another matter that a BSO might overlook checking ur POF in the first place, but that's not the norm/procedure.

Anybody who holds more than $10000 even $1 more will have their name and address recorded by customs. Let's say, it is family of two and husband holds $10001 in his pocket. You would think it is way less than $10001 per person (10001/2=5000.50), but NO. Because if the husband is searched they find money on him, on one person, so he is the one who hold more than $10000. So, keep in mind that money should be physically divided between people, not "assumed" 'half of it is someone else's".

Proof of Funds email reply from CHC - New Delhi, India

Dear Sir/Madam,

This is in response to your recent email enquiry to the Immigration Section of the Canadian High Commission in New Delhi.

The amount of funds you need to have in order to settle in Canada depends on the size of your family. The funds must be available to you and transferable to Canada. They must be unencumbered by debts or other obligations.

Number of family members
Funds required
1 - $11,086
2 - $13,801
3 - $16,967
4 - $20,599
5 - $23,364
6 - $26,350
7 or more - $29,337

Acceptable proof of funds are:

-bank accounts in your name or the name of your accompanying spouse/common-law partner;
-cashable investments in your name or the name of your accompanying spouse/common-law partner;
-cashable fixed deposits in your name of the name of your accompanying spouse/common-law partner.

Not acceptable are:

-bank accounts in someone else's name;
-bank accounts which are joint in your name and someone else (other than your accompanying spouse/common-law partner);
-bank accounts in the name of your spouse who is not accompanying you to Canada;
-property valuations;
-vehicle valuations;
-jewellery valuations.

You are not required to carry your funds in cash when you arrive in Canada. You are, however, required to show documentary evidence that you have the funds available (in bank accounts or cashable investments), and that they can be transferred to Canada.

A port of entry officer in Canada may seek to confirm these funds before granting you permanent residence along with your dependants. (was in indirect form in this sentence only).

If you have arranged employment in Canada, you do not have to meet these financial requirements. Arranged employment means that you have an offer of indeterminate employment from an employer in Canada. You must be either currently working in that employment on a work permit in Canada, or have been issued a labour market opinion has must have been provided by the Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC). In order to be exempt from the minimum funds requirement, the offer of employment must be genuine, the employment must not part-time or seasonal, the wages offered must be consistent with the prevailing wage rate for the occupation, and the working conditions must meet generally accepted Canadian standards.

Thanks Rocky!!! This mail is helpful to understand the POF docs at POE.

Dear Qorax,
I am currently living in Sweden. I am wondering about can I show the POF as bank statement from Sweden? My plan is going there to apply for PR card but i will come back to Sweden and will go back permanently to Canada after a year or so. That's why i dont want to carry cash to Canada at the first time. Will it work or what is ur opinion on POF?
Thanks

Hi Mr.Qorax
I have questions regarding POF. Just recently,CHC London asked me to provide POF for the second time with explanation for large deposits. My POF is from National Bonds and Mashreq Millionaire certificate which I deposited last June 2012 when they asked for POF together with our Medical request. It is also written in the letter that I must provide 6 mos. bank transaction history. I already inquire in Mashreq Bank if they can provide bank transaction history but they said they will issue balance certificate only since I don't have bank account with them. As for the National Bonds I already used the money but will have the complete POF once we get the visa and land to Canada. Can I show the letter from our HR about my gratuity pay once I resign from my job and settle to Canada?( to prove to them I have enough POF aside from the money from Mashreq bank?) Please I need your opinion on this matter please. Does this mean my application will be rejected if I did not provide them the 6 mos transaction history? I'm really worried. Thanks in advance for the reply.

Hello Ilovecanada! Huge amount of deposit definitely raises a red flag for the embassy, especially when u did it only upon their request for POF explanation, although you can always justify in 1,001 ways. What I would like to clarify is that.. Did they actually request you to explain your POF TWICE? Before Medical issuance & before Passport Request Issuance? This is very unusual. Are you on a family application & what is your NOC?
