Sorry. I didnt quite get the statement
"they only accept for minors even after showing them the necessary documents"
Is it because medical records were part of the requirements which your were unable to produce so Embassy refused your application? Do you mind sharing your country of birth? Retention of medical records for hospitals is mostly 5 years only. Afterwhich, these docs are archived. Did you try contacting the hospital to which you were born and seek a "certification" in lieu of the medical records? Thats what i did. My embassy accepted my application.
In the CIC website, it clearly states that if you are outside Canada/USA, you must submit the application through the Embassy/Consulate to which you are physically located.
And since you coursed it through a friend in Sydney(i assume in Nova Scotia), that is where the inconsistency lies and the reason why its taking quite long maybe? There maybe a misrepresentation in the application.
I hope they coordinate with you the soonest.

In Lagos (Nigeria), they say they don't understand the first generation born abroad application. They only accept for minors(babies). Even when the application form states that it is Minor and Adults.
To make things though or impossible, since you are disturbing them, they tell you to go get documents or records that they know would have being destroyed or never existed because of poor record keeping ( that is the medical records). It was really very frustrating.
The reason I sent directly via a family friend to Sydney was this reason because they didn't accept the document and thus caused a delay of over a year to get the documents submitted.
There is also an option to submit indirectly on the application package which is what I used and I stated the relationship with the person who posted in Canada on my behalf.
The guys hear are not too friendly and even with mails to the Embassy stating my challenge, the front desk person told me to my face that 'there is nothing like fist generation born abroad, and that my documents if submitted would never go beyond his desk.
