Dear Experts,

I hope everyone is doing great. I am a Permanent Resident and about to get married in Pakistan. I have the following queries:

1) Apart from getting my Spouse's Police Clearance Certificate from Pakistan, getting the MRC , and 20 photos taken at different places at different times , rukhsati , valeema, nikah pictures. What else should I note down in the list while being in Pakistan , so that I should be able to apply for the spousal immigration, right after coming back to Canada ?

2) Do I need to attest the MRC from anywhere ? Also, do I need to get the English translation of the Urdu Nikah Naama ?

3) Do I need to open a joint bank account for myself and my spouse ?

4) At this point of time, I am not working. So would it be a problem in sponsoring my spouse ? Someone told me if I have some funds in my Canadian bank account , then it should be fine. If so, then what balance should I maintain ?

5) Under the documents checklist, I have to provide Both of the below following documents out of four:

(a) Important documents for you and your spouse showing that you are recognized as each other’s spouse (such as employment or insurance benefits).
(b) Documentary evidence of financial support between you and your sponsor, and/or shared expenses.

I am confused , like what documents shall I provide to satisfy the above 2 points ?

6) Do I need to apply for my spouse's Smart NICOP ( showing mine and my spouse's temporary address same )

7) Also, I would be renewing my NICOP ; since I am a permanent resident of Canada as well, I would be changing the country of Stay as Canada, but do I need to add my Canadian address under the temporary/permanent address in NICOP ?

Also, please do provide your valuable suggestions/advices , that I should follow in order to get my spousal's case successful.

Thanks a lot for sparing you time..

- Receipts of Hall Bookings, Shoppings, Dresses, etc.
- Sponsor's Visits to Pakistan
- Honeymoon photos, Random outdoor photos, random photos of both going to various family events or parties together, etc/
- Make sure both are looking happy and comfortable in photos.

2) Do I need to attest the MRC from anywhere ? Also, do I need to get the English translation of the Urdu Nikah Naama ?
Yes. IRCC mainly look for Urdu Nikkahnama along with its English or French Translation.
MRC don't need to be attested since it's bilingual, however it's a good practice get it attested from Ministry of Foreign Affairs (totally optional) when using it for immigration.

3) Do I need to open a joint bank account for myself and my spouse ?
It's not a mandatory requirement, however it's a good way of showing cohabitation.

4) At this point of time, I am not working. So would it be a problem in sponsoring my spouse ? Someone told me if I have some funds in my Canadian bank account , then it should be fine. If so, then what balance should I maintain ?
You can sponsor spouse while being unemployed. However, you have to show/explain how you'll be supporting your spouse through any other means.

Any document such as medical insurance, life insurance policy recognizing both of you as each other's spouses. There can be many other examples as list is not exhaustive.

6) Do I need to apply for my spouse's Smart NICOP ( showing mine and my spouse's temporary address same )
Without modified CNIC/NICOP, you will not be able to apply for marital-FRC. IRCC have requested this from time to time during processing.

7) Also, I would be renewing my NICOP ; since I am a permanent resident of Canada as well, I would be changing the country of Stay as Canada, but do I need to add my Canadian address under the temporary/permanent address in NICOP ?
It's your choice. This will not have any affect on your spousal sponsorship. NICOP itself is not a mandatory requirement by IRCC anyway.

Also, please do provide your valuable suggestions/advices , that I should follow in order to get my spousal's case successful.

Well, be truthful and precise. Don't create or concoct anything. Immigration cases are processed much faster if your case is straightforward and your answers and proof are precise and to the point.

Thanks a lot Waqas !

After getting the Nikah Naama, it's english translation, MRC , getting the Smart NICOP changed for both husband and wife ( so that the address of the bride would match with the address of groom and also husband's name would be added in Smart NICOP , and the status would also changed from Single to Married for both the spouses. And then I could easily get the FRC as well to validate the marriage.

Is it also compulsory to change the passport of bride ( For adding the Husband's name on Passport , instead of father's name ) ? Because the bride already has the passport valid for another 5 years. So is it necessary to change her passport as well for spousal immigration to Canada ?

Hi Wasiq,
My husband is going to be sponsoring me for the PR. We wanted guidance regarding the name change, we all know that it is not necessary but does it help in quick processing of the application?

No influence on the speed of processing or approval/refusal. Many women don’t change their last name it is personal choice. What is important is completing all the marriage rituals before applying.

Name Change is discouraged in Canada, especially in Quebec. More importantly, as per your relationship, they'll be looking into the financial, social, physical and emotional aspects of your relationship (degree of commitment.

Regarding ritual norms (mainly for Pakistan) during wedding event, make sure you are signing marriage contract/certificate (take as many photos of it as you possibly can), greeting and welcoming at the time of arrival of barat, rukhsati, etc.

That is just mainly a Quebec thing. In other provinces it is personal preference. Plenty of women change their names.

True. The reason I said it's discouraged is because you have to go through a lot of paperwork and departments. For example, you have to change your Canadian/Foreign Passport/PR card, SIN, have your record updated with CRA, have your health card updated, have your driver's license updated. In short, it isn't free and will have no benefit in speeding up immigration application.

Quebec is a different ball game. Even if you legally change your name due to marriage, they don't accept it at all.

Have to agree in the sense that it’s a major headache. The exact reason I never changed my last name and don’t intend to. Not worth the hassle.
