I have a similar case, I am currently a postdoc at the National University of Singapore and chose NOC code 2121 for FSW cos I'm working in the school of medicine and my job description has a better fit. My question however is that the date on my PhD certificate is Sept 2014 however my work experience letter dates back to July 2014. This is because I already finished my Thesis defense by June and since I am employed by someone from the same department as my PhD I could start working immediately. It's actually quite common for people to start working before all the paperwork is completed. Would it be a problem? Should I include a LOE explaining why I started working 3 months before the date on my certificate? I would also like to know which city has jobs for people in biomedical sciences? I have written Vancouver as the city I intend to live in but wondering if I should change to another city. Thanks

Hi, I did my PhD from NUS too and I'm a postdoc in Canada now. I suggest you add a letter of explanation for your situation. Had you defended by June 2014? If yes, I would get a letter from your current and PhD supervisors confirming you had defended before you started working. I know this because I had applied for a work permit after I had submitted my thesis and was waiting for the defense and they wanted proof that I would defend my PhD before starting work as a postdoc. I think even if you get a letter from your PhD supervisor that at that time you had completed all your PhD related assignments and experiments and were ready to defend before you started it should be fine. Defense dates require the availability of different professors and you can explain in your LOE that because it was within the same department, you started working before the defense. I guess it wouldn't be a problem because you already have the degree. For me they had to give the visa before I defended and had the degree.kenok said:
