Thanks! I'm trying to get it clarified with my supervisor.
Ask also some immigration specialist at your university (most univ. have them, and they are quite knowledgeable). Just make sure you write a letter of explanation when applying. If I were you, I'd go with the NOC that matches, IRCC is aware of the situation.

Thank you jes_On, Janaki, and vsoftco!

Although I did my research at a company (in Vancouver), I was employed by Queen's University and was funded through the NSERC Engage program.

jes_On, the link you sent was for work permit. I wonder if the same would apply for permanent residence. I guess it would.

Anyway I will be using NOC 2121.

vsoftco, when you submitted your work experience letter with the NOC 2111, what was your job title mentioned in the letter? Was it postdoctoral fellow?

It mentioned that I was a "... postdoctoral fellow employed as a physicist at the University ...".

Hi Guys,
I have a similar case, I am currently a postdoc at the National University of Singapore and chose NOC code 2121 for FSW cos I'm working in the school of medicine and my job description has a better fit. My question however is that the date on my PhD certificate is Sept 2014 however my work experience letter dates back to July 2014. This is because I already finished my Thesis defense by June and since I am employed by someone from the same department as my PhD I could start working immediately. It's actually quite common for people to start working before all the paperwork is completed. Would it be a problem? Should I include a LOE explaining why I started working 3 months before the date on my certificate? I would also like to know which city has jobs for people in biomedical sciences? I have written Vancouver as the city I intend to live in but wondering if I should change to another city. Thanks

Hi, I did my PhD from NUS too and I'm a postdoc in Canada now. I suggest you add a letter of explanation for your situation. Had you defended by June 2014? If yes, I would get a letter from your current and PhD supervisors confirming you had defended before you started working. I know this because I had applied for a work permit after I had submitted my thesis and was waiting for the defense and they wanted proof that I would defend my PhD before starting work as a postdoc. So I got letters from my supervisor confirming the status of my PhD and my tentative defense dates.

Vancouver is a good city, although there are a lot of companies now starting up in Ontario. But I don't think it matters which province you select at this stage. You can always move later.

Hi guys,

Do you think the job duties listed below would be sufficient for NOC 4011 (postdoc)?

--Conducting research in xxxxx area of specialization
--Analyzing scientific data
--Presenting result finding at conferences
--Publishing research findings
--Teaching students laboratory skills

Just a short outline of my letter

Hi Janaki, should I just ask my boss to rewrite the letter and indicate that I started working sometime after September? It would not affect my scores

I think even if you get a letter from your PhD supervisor that at that time you had completed all your PhD related assignments and experiments and were ready to defend before you started it should be fine. Defense dates require the availability of different professors and you can explain in your LOE that because it was within the same department, you started working before the defense. I guess it wouldn't be a problem because you already have the degree. For me they had to give the visa before I defended and had the degree.

Thanks Janaki,
I can actually get the letter from my PhD supervisor. Yes I had finished defense by then though I still needed to submit some corrections.

Hi,

I have a Canadian Phd and 3 years of postdoc experience outside Canada. I don`t have any teaching experience so I won`t be able to apply under NOC 4011. Any one got PR as Postdoc under NOC 4012?

How about NOC 2115 for Postdoc? My research focuses on composite materials and ceramics. The problem is under the main duties mentioned in NOC 2115 there is only one duty for material scientists. I was wondering if that would be a problem. Also Postdoc job title is mentioned under NOC 4011. I am really confused. Please help.

PS: My application was once rejected due to missing a lead statement in the reference letter (FSW Phd stream). I don’t want to make any mistake this time.

Many thanks in advance.

LOL. If your work experience is in a different NOC than your work permit, then it would be unauthorized. So, yes : )

I applied in 2015 and used my speciality NOC (2111) and got PR without any issues. 4011 was a very poor match for me (less than 20% match). I heard lots of contradicting things about this whole mess-up with the postdoc NOC, so my suggestion (in case OP decides to go with 4011) is to at least attach a detailed letter of explanation as to why you picked 4011 NOC even if it doesn't match the duties.
