Canada may let provinces cherry-pick immigrants to end applicant backlog: Jason Kenney
Postmedia News Mar 7, 2012 – 8:18 PM ET | Last Updated: Mar 7, 2012 8:33 PM ET

OTTAWA — Canada will consider legislating away its massive backlog of immigration applications and allowing provinces to cherry-pick from one big pool of would-be newcomers in a bid to transform Canada’s immigration system into one that’s driven by the economy, Immigration Minister Jason Kenney said Wednesday.

In a speech to business leaders at an Economic Club of Canada luncheon, Kenney promised “transformational change” to immigration that emphasizes the need for skilled newcomers who can fill gaps in the country’s labour market.

He suggested the pre-2008 backlog of nearly one million applications is bogging down the system and hindering reforms and outlined several pilot projects and strategies the government is considering to eliminate it.

“The time has come for fundamental change to our rigid, slow-moving immigration process and this government will deliver that change,” he said.

“People with flexible human capital, high levels of language proficiency and a prearranged job are set for success so that will be an important guidepost as we move toward transformational change.”

New immigrants must be employable, have ‘language proficiency’: Jason Kenney
By targeting younger and more language-proficient immigrants, a “transformational” package of immigration reforms promises to end the “vicious circle of unemployment” for newcomers, says Citizenship and Immigration Minister Jason Kenney.

“For too long the story of immigration to Canada has been summed up by the frustration of the highly trained professional who arrived with the expectation of being able to work at his or her skill level,” he said, addressing the Canadian Club of Toronto on Monday.

“We’re going to stop this practice of inviting highly trained people to come to Canada if they don’t have jobs or they’re not likely to succeed in the labour market.”

Your 'in process' just started on March 17th. You have waited this long. It won't be very long before you get your MR. Few days to a few weeks I guess. Keep checking your email and mail box. I am not sure if you are going to get email or snail mail.
