Passport requested but not ready to moved to Canada just yet

Hi All,
We (with wife and 1 son) were applying to Alberta under AINP program. Did the medical exam in Sept 25 2010. Received request to send in passport last week. I believed they set the immigrant visa until Sept 24 2011 for landing purposes. The problem is we're not ready to land much less to relocate to Canada by Sept 24. We also can't just enter canada for the sake of landing purposes only and then coming back to US. If we're going to Canada, it will be for a one way travel, landing & relocating altogether. I'm aware that immigrant visa will have a fix deadline (Sept 24 in our case), it can't be extended/renewed. I have not sending our passport just yet and wondering if anyone here can shared their experience or advice.

Is there a way, before we have the immigrant visa on our passport, that we can delayed the timeline? This mean that we have to re-do the medical exam, which I don't mind.

Irrespective of whether you are ready to move now or not, you should send your passports for stamping right away. They usually give you a 30 day or a 60 day window, and if you do not get it stamped within this timeframe, you may stand to loose you're permanent residency, and you might have to start the whole process again. Sometimes, if requested they give you an extension, but this is only for a month or so.

If there is another way of extending the timeline, I am not aware of it ; you might want to consult a lawyer.

Send the passport and get it stamped. If you do not you will lose your PR. After you get the stamping if you are unable to move by the deadline, you can request an extension for one more year on the condition that you will pass the medical again. I am not sure if they will ask for PCC again, if they do, thats again time consuming.

Personally, first thing I would do is get that stamp on my passport and then explore other options.

Please don't make that mistake of not sending the passport....By the way which proccesing center your application was processed?

Nope. It does not work so easily. You have to go through the process. Someone who has requested an extension will be able to guide you how to do it officially. CIC NY office may have instructions on their website.

Your nomination was issued to you on the needs of the market at the time of your application. Two years down the lane, who knows, their needs might change and they may no longer require somebody with your background. Hence, you may or may not be able to apply or even get an extension.

Yes I agree with both US2IND2CAN and CHIGIRL.... Its not going to be that easy... I would reccommed that you talk to someone in the consulate for proper guidance and suggestion instead of taking our words...

If I may ask, what is preventing you from completing your landing formalities? Relocating, of course is a different issue.

On the letter that they sent requesting the passport, it was written that the expiration date of the immigrant visa can't be extended. So, it is official that the deadline can't be extended, but, I'm still throwing the question to this forum to hear experience/info where there's maybe exception or situation where we can extend the deadline based on experience from other people on this forum.

I guess what Chigirl is asking is this: Given the known and unknown issues that may arise as a result of your not completing landing formalities, WHAT is keeping you from doing that?? You indicate that you are in the U.S which would make landing a doable deal and a sacrifice worth making in exchange for your family's peace of mind. If your legal status in the U.S is such that you can't come back if you leave, shouldn't you be literally hugging this opportunity that you now have with Canada??
Having said all that, I understand that everyone's situation is unique and nothing is ever as easy as it seems for us "poor aliens" so I can appreciate your dilemma. I hope things work out for you. Godspeed.

@Slim, I'm afraid you may not be able to extend the deadline to land. I'm curious as to why you are hesitant to land. One of your post indicates that you are in the US....surely, between now and September, you can find time to make a U-turn at the border (flagpole), but then I am not in your shoes nor can I wrap my head around the hesitation to execute this seemingly easy task.

You can't extend - it's simply not possible. You must land by the deadline/expiration date. If you do not land by the expiration date and are still interested in migrating to Canada, then you will have to start the application process again from scratch (i.e. re-do everything).
