The additional documents line for my parents application always showed not required, though I had submitted extra documents like Indian IDs of my parents, service records etc. in Dec 2019.
If parents arriving isn’t essential travel why it has been placed in category of travel restrictions exempt
Travel exemption doesn’t mean they don’t have to quarantine. Assume the only reason parents were on the travel exemption list from the beginning was to help with childcare while schools were mostly virtual, many childcare centres were closed and the governments were trying to allow people to keep working. Otherwise it wouldn’t make sense to increase the amount of older people in Canada who don’t have provincial healthcare and who could get infected with covid and place more pressure on the healthcare system and added expense. Normally immediate family is limited to spouse and dependent children. The word “essential“ is confusing people. The only people who seem to be exempt are people who must cross the border regularly for their jobs. People needing to cross the border to receive medical treatment unavailable in their home country were also added to the list of people who are exempt from the quarantine hotel. There would be very few people needing to cross the border to receive medical care. Most seem to be in clinical trials and they are more fearful of covid than most people and most have been in pretty strict quarantine already due to their health.
Just read at CTV news site that federal government covers hotel stay for refugees. I’m not against quarantine, I don’t see a difference between waiting for results at home vs hotel. Why elderly people after lengthy flights instead going to settle down with comfort at home need additional execution of going with all luggage to hotel small room.

There are almost no refugees arriving to Canada at the moment due to travel restrictions. We may be talking about a handful of people. Nobody is forcing elderly people travel to Canada at the moment. Heading to a hotel with your luggage is not a very strenuous activity especially when you have luggage on wheels. Knowing that you will have to manage your own luggage you may want to pack with that in mind. There will likely have people to help lift luggage into whatever transportation that is provided if needed. Quarantine hotels are required in order to attempt to prevent the spread of the covid mutations into the community. If one of your parents had one of the covid mutations the driver of the car taking them home could get infected. I assume that the Transportation provided to the hotel quarantine will have significant precautions to protect the driver. People quarantining are often not quarantining with only those Who were travelling. With the new mutations a whole households would be guaranteed to get infected. Although you may be happy for your whole household to get infected the health system can not risk whole households getting infected. Travellers quarantining with their non-traveling family members should actually quarantine for longer than 14 days. With the 14 day current requirement in most provinces there are risks that a non-traveling household member could lead to community spread. In Alberta people will need to quarantine for 24 days if a household members tests positive for a mutation. This may be in place in other provinces.

There are already 3 cases in Ontario where you have had community spread through buildings where multiple people from different households have been infected. The thought is that infection has spread through a common area like the elevator. These new variants are extremely contagious.

Hotel rooms are comfortable. After long flights people will probably just want to sleep or rest for a few days. We are talking about a hotel in a 1st world country and not to a tent in a refugee camp. People will have pretty comfortable surrounding, food, a warm shower, etc. Nobody should want to risk catching covid or want to risk spreading covid to their family. Long covid isn’t getting much attention. Even with a mild case of covid that doesn’t require hospitalization you could have longterm sever health issues. Today I was watching some cases on the news in the UK. Even children have ended up with long covid. Imagine having your healthy child end up in wheelchair and so fatigued that they can’t attend school just because of a covid infection.

Would add that is all about mutations. Canada wants to keep track of people with the covid mutations since they are more contagious and can lead to exponential growth of infections. It seems as though Canada will also be reviewing quarantine plans more carefully. That has already happened in some provinces but I know in Ontario there was almost no review of quarantine plans other than getting an address and phone number of the quarantine location and only email/phone follow-up. This leads to many quarantining incorrectly and some ignoring quarantine rules altogether. We will see if the government now screens quarantine plans to ensure people are able to isolate, that those quarantining won’t have contact with pregnant women of those who have medical conditions that make them more vulnerable to covid, etc. Based on the government press releases they have apparently hired a security company to do more in person checks. There are still flights arriving with covid positive people even with the covid test requirement so there is still a lot of covid around the world although we may not hear about it daily. Many don’t seem to understand that the tests only show that a negative test only means that you don’t have enough viral load on that day and it doesn’t mean that you definitely don’t have covid. As you said it is much easier to track covid if people are in hotels. If people test positive it is much easier to keep them in the hotels. Many in Canada have been the ones in lockdown, not seeing family, having businesses closed, etc. Staying in a hotel for 3 days in not a huge sacrifice. The UK now has people from “red zones” pay to quarantine for 10 days. Australia and NZ have hotel quarantine for 14 days. We have all worked really hard to finally get the covid numbers trending down in Canada and we have almost lifted all lockdowns so the last thing Canada wants to do is have a huge spike in cases again.
Not all hotels in 1st world country are comfortable. Do you know that there were complaints / horror stories of bed bugs in Canadian hotels? Or human/dog hairs on the bed or couch? Some thermostats or airconditioners are not comfortable. Have you ever had jet lags after a long flight? What's more, have you ever experienced about yellowish water from your tap? The meals provided by the hotel not meeting your diet requirements or religious needs?
Disagree. Have you ever stayed in a Canadian (or other 1 st world countries) hotel room that was not comfortable at all?
Govt has listed the hotels after considering all the parameters. And moreover I have mentioned that government is discouraging the traveling during this second wave. The government is taking all the necessary steps to contain the virus. Human beings are never comfortable whenever restrictions has been imposed. It's part of our nature though these restrictions are good for us.
Government has discouraged traveling since the first wave. The government approved facility is just an escalation of that discouraging. Hotel rooms can be uncomfortable.
Before booking the hotel anybody will see the reviews and why should I stay in a uncomfortable hotel? The hotels govt has listed are good ones in my opinion. Any way there is nothing personal. These are general opinions by individuals. This group is not for debate. Some people agree some disagree, it doesn't make any difference. Agree will accept - disagree won't.
