Hi everybody,

I am a Canadian Citizen and I'm trying to get my 22 year old university student cousin to come visit me and my family for 2 weeks.

today she told me that she saw on the internet one of the requirements was for her to have 50000 yuan saved and frozen in her bank account.
is this real?it seems kind of crazy doesnt it? what kind of 22 year old university student would have that much money saved up? especially in china. i didnt see this on the CIC website either.

any advice?

what we have so far is:
- an invitation letter from me with proof of my income and property
- she has 10000 yuan in her bank account, which i transferred to her a month ago
- return flight tickets
- medical insurance
- a letter from her school vice principal stating that she will need to return to finish her exams and earn her bachelor degree. she will live in her residence at school

50,000 yuan is around $10,000 CDN. No she doesn't need that much money. However, you should not be transferring money to her account, as she might be refused since she's receiving money from a 3rd party rather than saving up her own money.

Also you shouldn't be buying tickets until she gets the visa, unless your tickets are refundable. An itinerary is good enough.

thank you. what should i do about the tranferred money then?

also how many months of bank statement does she have to show? would it be possible to wait long enough to get a bank statement that does not show her money was given by me?

I think each country's requirements are different, but most of the time it's 3 months bank statement. In that case, if you don't want your transferred money to result in a refusal, it's best to wait until 3 months have passed such that her bank statement won't show your transferred money.

When my girlfriend was applying for a TRV, she just showed a bank statement with her current balance. There was just the date, and the amount of money in the account. It was a foreign currency account, and she opened it a few days before applying for the visa, converted her savings to foreign currency (euros) and deposited them in the account lump-sum. She got the visa, they didn't ask for any additional information regarding her bank account. So, ask the bank if they can issue a statement which just contains her balance, not her transactions.

You said your cousin is a student? When will she finish her studies?

If she is coming to Canada for 2 weeks, and her studies are continuing after that (e.g. for 1 more year after that), and if she has official confirmation from her school about that, that should be plenty of proof that she intends to go back to China after her visit. That coupled with a bank statement showing her balance, should (it's of course impossible to say for sure) be enough to get her visa approved.

I wouldn't worry about CIC or the embassy asking where she got the money from. They are not stupid, they know that students in China with a lot of money in their account most likely have rich parents or other family members.
