Applied on July 15- surrender and Oci together.
Received OCI card today.
waiting for surrender certificate.

do we need to get sticker stamped or anything in our canadian passport?
No need to get any stamping on Canadian passport. You just have to use OCI booklet & Canadian passport to travel to India.

My application date is also same as you - 15-July-2020 & got my OCI today. Please update me when you receive Surrender certificate since I have also not received Cancelled Indian passport & Surrender certificate.

Congratulations. Will you please share when you have received back your Canadian passport and Citizenship certificate, whether along with OCI or prior of receiving OCI. I am also planning to apply for surrender of Indian Passport and for getting OCI.

Hi all,

Very basic question. I see that i can apply for surrender of Indian Passport and OCI together. Can I do this process if I have not applied for Canadian Passport yet? or is having Canadian Passport mandatory?

Guys I have a question on Filling OCI registration part B.
Coming to my current situation i have got my Canadian citizen ship in November 2019 .I was lazy and didn't apply for my OCI card . and pandemic struck in march ..so here iam now(as on today) trying to submit my online form.

My background i have come to Canada as a PR in 2016(never visited or lived in any other country till then so basically an Indian citizen who came on a PR to Canada)

Question on Filling OCI registration part B.

1)Whether holding dual nationality? * Yes No
If YES, mention country and passport details.

Here my answer was NO .. but my doubt is i haven't given up my Indian passport yet so i assume iam an Indian citizen too for now . so should i answer this question as YES ? ...can you please let me know if my understanding is correct.

2) in the same OCI registration Part B there is another question Previous Nationality of Applicant (If Any) and its followed by another question Renunciated Passport No here my doubt is if i answer the above question as yes i need to give my passport number but the problem is i haven't given up my indian passport yet...

I am thinking of answering question no 1 as NO so that i dont have to answer question number 2 .But iam afraid if iam misrepresenting the facts.

it would be really great if people who have already gone trough the OCI process can answer these questions..

Please advice ...

As per Consulate general of India, Toronto website

"Even after acquiring the Canadian citizenship, the Indian passport can be used to travel for 3 months from the day of getting the Canadian citizenship. The grace period is only for such cases where foreign citizenship has been acquired but a foreign passport is not available to the person. It is also mentioned that it is illegal to travel on an Indian passport, where a person has obtained a foreign passport.

Penalty will be charged if the passport is used after 3 months."

You can read further about surrendering the passport at the below link:

I believe "No" will be the appropriate answer to Q1 as India doesn't allow dual citizenship.
So one loses it's citizenship by default as soon as they become a citizen of some other country.

Surrendering the passport which is a property of India and getting the renunciation certificate is a mandatory step for applying for the OCI from India's side of law, kind of the last stage of severing all the ties and getting a lifelong visa/permit to visit/stay/work in India if you wish at a later stage. Again, the point to note here is only if you wish to apply for the OCI. Otherwise just surrendering the passport is sufficient, in which case you will have to apply for the appropriate visa to visit/work/stay in India as you wont be having the OCI.

I am still at the Canadian passport application phase and not reached the OCI stage yet. So will wait to see other's response/experience with their OCI application on these two questions.

In the meanwhile you may want to check another thread on OCI here: https://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/threads/oci.564994/

And another wonderfully written blog/site on the OCI application process: https://spark.adobe.com/page/w4G13xr1y2ut4/

All the best.

Hats off for such valuable information. I have applied for passport on 12th August,2020 but the file has not been opened as yet. Will please share status of your passport application. I was told by customer care officer on 1 800 567 6868 (pressing 2 of the options) that after 10 days from the date of receipt of application ,the files are usually created and tracking number is generated. Thanks

Same situation like your's for me too sir. The only difference is I sent my application on 11th by Canadapost and passport program received it on 13th and I contacted them on 18th Aug using the link :
https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/canadian-passports/contact-passport-program.html

Got the following response today.
"Although we could have received your application, it has not been examined yet nor has a file been created in your name. Passport service have been suspended due to the COVID-19 situation. The processing of application will resume once the situation has been resolved
If you sent your passport application via courier or registered mail, we recommend that you communicate with the courier service provider in order to confirm that your passport application was delivered at the Passport Program.
For information concerning your passport application, please call 1-800-567-6868. Please do not reply to this email. We trust this information is of assistance to you."

So I believe its better to sleep without worrying about the processing and delays and get surprised with the passport in our mailboxes as and when it comes :)

Thank you very much for detailed information. Today I have contacted at above referred phone number and I was also informed that my file has not been created as yet. She further advised me to call them back in the mid of next week as by that time my file will be created. She also apprised me that after 10 working days after the day of receiving application, they usually create the file and in next 10 days they complete all formalities of contacting Guarantor, charging passport fee from credit card. As per her version total 20 to 25 working days are taken for issuance of new passport. I have also decided to apply for surrender of Indian passport and OCI I will initiate working only after receipt of Canadian passport.

Hi @Chrisstina can you please keep us posted when you receive your new Canadian passport and original citizenship certificate in the mail? I would like to apply for a passport but a bit worried about having my original certificate lost in the mail. Good luck!
