I have a random question about the passport request, just because I'm curious about it and I always like to learn more about immigration and how it works... Does anyone and everyone, no matter which country you are applying from and whether it is inland or outland, need to send out their actual passport when they request it? And if so, why do they need the passport physically in their hands? Is it so they can stamp something in there for when you are ready to land? Or do they need to just look through it and verify some things even if you sent in scanned copies of your passport pages? I'm skeptical about having to send my passport out in the mail since they aren't very cheap and it's obviously the only thing that's gonna get me in and out of Canada right now lol... I'm sure everyone feels this way when they have to send their passports out, but I'm just wondering why we have to do this cause I never knew the reason why.

From my understanding, they verify that you have a valid passport that is valid for at least 6 months following the issue date of the visa. I also believe that they will stamp the visa into your passport. If i'm wrong here someone please correct me... :)

Depends on the visa office. With some you can email scanned copies, others demand the actual passport.

Passport-

If you are from a visa exempt country then you will only have to send in a copy of your passport.
I know this from my friends who just went through the whole procedure!
BUt you can contact them and double check, when they send out the request! They will respond quite quickly.

i imagine the process also depends on whether you are coming from a visa exempt country or not. Countries needing a vistior visa probably require the actual passport as apposed to visa exempt countries that are a little bit less stringent.

Yeah thats what I figured, cause why else would they physically need in front of them other than to put a stamp or visa in it. Thanks for the feedback though! I like to know what immigration is all about lol

I think it might take a little while to put new people in the system. Is this the first time you've received a Client ID? If so how long ago did you get it?
I had a client ID from the last time I reapplied to extend my stay in Canada... I never thought it would work to log me into eCAS until I just randomly tried it one day with the Client ID I had and bam there was all my information lol.
I had the client ID since 2007, when I got my PR...well, no worries, I have been patient...and will try to hold on to it :)

the way it works :) with immigration is:
-for visa-exempt, normally you are not required to send your passport anymore. A scanned copy is usually enough. Some VO will ask for a scanned copy even if it's already in the application, to make sure that it's the same passport, some VO will just not request anything (London is like this). Then - once you have sent your passport copy (or not, like London!), a few weeks/days later, you will get in the post the COPR (confirmation of PR) , 2 copies: one with a picture, and one without. With these two copies, and your passport, you will land at a border post - the border officer keeps the one with picture so they can make your PR card (sent by post 2 months later), and you keep the other one as a proof of your status in Canada, and with that you can get a SIN etc.
-for non-visa-exempt, they are asked to send their passport, or drop them at the embassy, and pick them up (or they get sent back via courrier, usually, the CO asks the applicant to supply a registered envelop), so they have a visa in the passport + 2 two copies of the COPR. The reason is: airlines controllers are not trained to see a COPR, so non-visa-exempt would not be allowed to board a plane without a proper visa. On the contrary, if you're from a visa-exempt country, the airline will let you board the plane assuming that you are a tourist, and once you arrive in Canada, you can tell the visa officer that you want to "land as a PR".

Good luck!

Got PPR yesterday!! June applicant, August approval..

It has been well said that God always answers prayer. Sometimes He says, “YES.” sometimes He says, “NO.” Sometimes He says, "WAIT". Sometimes the hardest answer to accept is "wait". It's difficult to be left there clueless, wondering how God will handle our problem, but we MUST have FAITH.. and oftentimes He will give it to us in HIS TIME!" ♥ And in the end its always WORTH the WAIT.
