Please we will need the counsel of 4011 who have already landed in Canada as permanent residents to guide us on how to integrate into the Canadian academic environment.
Many people have asked such a question, but you really need a PhD from a good, preferably internationally known, university to stand a chance to get a job. Before your first full-time academic job, you probably need part-time teaching experience, and most Canadians gain those experiences from doing part-time teaching while studying their full-time Ph.D. Most school like to hire teachers with good teaching evaluation scores. That will help you get a teaching-based job. However, even research-based professor jobs prefer a candidate with a good teaching record.
If you are looking for research-based professor positions, my hutch is that it is difficult nowadays. In most fields you need good publications. However, some academic fields may still have openings. Therefore, it depends on your field.
Even teaching positions require some research publications nowadays. It is that competitive.
