The above is true and a good way to save some $$$.

However, if you really can, it is totally worth your while spending the money to go through a proper driving school.

Personally, I can say that I have been driving car since high school in India and motorcycle probably even before that.
However, even after 10+ years of driving experience in India pretty much all over India, I chose to go through a driving school for both car and motorcycle.

Result : I am from Halifax, Nova Scotia - a small town, where life is very laid back and driving is relaxed and everybody follows all rules pretty much spot on and it is super easy to spot a bad driver or even a driver that really didn't learn driving in this part of the world. I can now drive very effectively here and blend into the traffic nicely. There are so many minor things that I didn't know before the driving school. Whenever I hang out with other Indian people, I NEVER let them drive. There is NO WAY I can digest their driving habits. (Admittedly, I used to drive the same way back in India). When I drive now, I rarely, if ever, get honks or angry gestures from other people. My fellow desis on the other hand...... what do I say!!!

You will have to take classes in Canada but having a local license that is more that 1 year old implies that there is no waiting period to go from a G1 to a G2... Which helps :)

Hi sir
So nice of u reply I had a big question I took SoCal assistance 3 years ago is can still effected m file

If you are applying to sponsor your partner after marriage then it will not affect you as having an income is not a criteria when applying for PR for your spouse

Agreed on that count.
Does the DMV in Ontario take the India license on it's face value?

I know that DMV-NS does not do it, and you have to present supporting documents - Affidavit / Signed & stamped letter from your respective RTO in India declaring that this license is indeed genuine and true.

Bonus tip : Have your current insurance company in India give you letter stating clean driving record / no accidents & number of years of experience. You insurance company in Canada might see it and knock down your insurance. It happened in my case! :)

If you already have an Indian license that is atleast one year old then you can self declare 1 year experience and apply for the G2 straight away after passing the G1.. You dont need anything from the RTO/gov

If your Indian licence is more than 3 years old then you have 1 chance to apply for the G (full) license drive test directly. For this, you need to get a driving license extract from your local RTO and when you go to Canada, give this document (plus a copy of your Indin license) to the MTO (the equivalent of the RTO). They will then allow you to give the G test directly after passes the G1. IF you clear the driving test you get a full license; if you fail it you must apply for the G2 (without a waiting period).
The MTO website says you need a letter from your RTO giving proof that you've been driving etc but in my experience (since you cant get that from the RTO), the extract works perfectly well..

I was wondering.... Does our PCC expire after 1 year (like our medicals)? Or does it stay good through the process of our PR application?

Thanks

From what I understand, your PCC is valid for 1 year. But it must be submitted to CIC within 3 months.

For example, a PCC generated on 01-Apr-12, must reach CIC before 01-Aug-12 but will only expire on 01-Apr-13.

And like the medicals, the PCC validity can be extended by the VO.

My wife went to MP and he inquired on our behalf and this is what we have got..
It's really disappointing..

"Our records show that, in this case, we have received notification from CPC Mississauga that the sponsorship has been approved, but we have not yet received the application kit, including all the necessary forms and supporting documents.

As the application kit should be received shortly, we request the applicants to await contact from our office. Once a file has been created for the application, it will be reviewed and an eligibility decision made. If it is determined that an interview will be required, a letter will be sent to the applicant advising of the date and time for the scheduled interview. If it is determined that the interview can be waived, the applicant will receive a request for submission of original passport and any other documents or information required to finalize the application."

I have already sent the passport 6 months ago and they haven't yet received the application kit from Canada.. :(

Anybody gone through this earlier? :'( :'( :'( :'(

I sent a mail with all the proofs and timelines along with attached mails and documents.
