The above is true and a good way to save some $$$.
However, if you really can, it is totally worth your while spending the money to go through a proper driving school.
Personally, I can say that I have been driving car since high school in India and motorcycle probably even before that.
However, even after 10+ years of driving experience in India pretty much all over India, I chose to go through a driving school for both car and motorcycle.
Result : I am from Halifax, Nova Scotia - a small town, where life is very laid back and driving is relaxed and everybody follows all rules pretty much spot on and it is super easy to spot a bad driver or even a driver that really didn't learn driving in this part of the world. I can now drive very effectively here and blend into the traffic nicely. There are so many minor things that I didn't know before the driving school. Whenever I hang out with other Indian people, I NEVER let them drive. There is NO WAY I can digest their driving habits. (Admittedly, I used to drive the same way back in India). When I drive now, I rarely, if ever, get honks or angry gestures from other people. My fellow desis on the other hand...... what do I say!!!
