Hi all,
I am a Canadian citizen, my wife is in canada awaiting her sponsorship approval. Is there any medical insurance that covers pregnancy if she becomes pregnant before she gets her sponsor approved?

It varies by province.

In BC, the answer (found here) would be:

Residents
A person must be a B.C. resident to qualify for medical coverage under MSP. A resident is a person who meets all of the following conditions:

  • must be a citizen of Canada or be lawfully admitted to Canada for permanent residence;
  • must make his or her home in B.C.; and
  • must be physically present in B.C. at least six months in a calendar year, or a shorter prescribed period.*
* Eligible B.C. residents (citizens of Canada or persons who are lawfully admitted to Canada for permanent residence) who are outside B.C. for vacation purposes only, are allowed a total absence of up to seven months in a calendar year.

Dependents
Dependents of MSP beneficiaries are also eligible for coverage if they are B.C. residents as set out above. Dependents include a spouse, children and dependent post-secondary students.

Spouse: A resident of B.C. who is married to or is living and cohabiting in a marriage-like relationship with the applicant.

Are both of you in Canada? Which province are you in? You are a citizen, so I think you know that healtcare coverage is provincial and PR/citizen/residence rules for coverage are all different between provinces. In most cases, both you and her residencey matter.

And if you are asking about private insurnace, I don't think any of them cover existing condition (i.e. child birth cost for a pregnant patient)

Sounds like you are either living in Ontario or Quebec and both do not allow access to public healthcare until your spouse is a PR. Would be a lot better for her to arrive and start working before pregnancy so she gets some Canadian work experience and she qualifies for maternity leave payments.

I was looking for private insurance coverage that might include pregnancy if she becomes pregnant.
