Medical Exam

Hi,

I am sponsoring my wife to come to Canada and we were given some conflicting information regarding the medical exam. We initially thought that we needed to have the exam done before sending the package. When we called for an appointment, the doctor didn't seem to know what they were talking about because they asked us to bring the forms that we were given. We hadn't been given any forms because we hadn't submitted anything yet. Using google I found some forms online.. although they seemed to be forms that the doctor was supposed to have. They also wanted a case or file number or something which we didn't have.

I spoke to someone else who had recently immigrated and said that you file your papers first and then they'll give you that file number and they'll request the medical exam..

So on that advice we filed our papers without the medical exam and we have now just received notice that they cannot process it without the medical exam. Can we still do this and submit it? where do we send it?

Also, apparently we need ANOTHER 4 photos to go with the medical exam.. We already included 8 photos that they requested in the rest of the package? Is this normal? passport photos are expensive!

Read the Guides and if you want further help, specify which country/Visa Office you're applying to. Medical exams for Family Class applications are done up-front, meaning they need to be done BEFORE you submit your application, so your medical examiner will provide you a copy of the record as proof that your medical has been done, you will then include this record with all the other documentation, otherwise your complete application package will be returned.

It sounds like your doctor is either on the lazy side or behind on the times.

The forms used to be available in your country specific guide to print off. This was eliminate recently - like since I did my medical in October, 2012. Those forms you found online may be outdated. I wouldn't use them.

It depends on the timeline of your VO whether you do medicals before you submit or after. Medicals are good for 1 year, so if your VO processes 80% of applicants in about a year, you're fine. So VOs like Ottawa (13 months), London (9 months), do beforehand. Some VOs like Islamabad or Pretoria are over two years and you wait until they request the medical.

I would say, in general, your doctor and/or his staff isn't up to date on how this works. ;)

Yes, you must provide pictures. They're supposed to be the SAME picture you sent in with your file. This is so the VO can match your medical with your application and verify you're the same person by picture. This is because of fraud - yes it does happen!

I didn't realize we had to do this so I had two different sets done (in my medicals like hair is straight, in the ones I sent with the application it is wavy). Hopefully that doesn't delay my application. :-[

I don't think this will be a big deal as long as you look similar in both pictures. If identical twins will be the issue, then your birth certificate can pretty much attest that you were a single born.

I'm not really sure, but I don't think they will delay your app because of this. :)

My husband and son had two different photos as well..one for medicals and one for application. I had never heard or read that they needed to be the same photos. They were taken within a few weeks of each other, so there are no visible differences. I would think most people sending medicals after application have new photos too. And of course people will look slightly different in the picture on their copy of passport as well. I think there will only be a concern if there are differences significant enough to produce doubt about the identity.

I did read on here about a person who was asked for new application pictures (they didn't meet the specs) but wasn't asked for new medical ones. And I believe that was very soon after submitting their application package.

It would be nice to hear from those with approvals, if they used the same photos for medicals.

 It feels very unfair that the information we could find told us one thing - that instructions to take the medical would come after we had sent the application package in - and CIC now tells us another thing. I had an appointment booked with that first doctor before we sent the papers, but we cancelled because of the information we found!
Anyway, I was lucky enough to get a doctor's appointment (another doctor, hopefully knows what they're doing) tomorrow morning (they had a cancellation!) and rushed off to take the photos (another $50 we don't have). Just hoping we won't end up at the bottom of the pile again...

I have to say though, that I'm very happy that I'm with my love and not waiting in different countries like so many others... ( :-* candalemon)

Tell me about it. We've spent about $1800 dollars so far on the application, plus all my lost wages.

you'll be fine. It's important that the application pictures are all the same, but for the medicals they can be form a different ste ( my doctor didn't require "immigration pictures", the "normal" ID pictures were fine).

Good luck with the doctor's appointment - but I confirm: I got approved, and had a different set of pictures! (8 for London, and 3 for the doctor). I even showed up with 3 different pictures at the doctor, and he didn't mind - as long as I look the same and it's pretty obvious that it was me, he didn't care.
Lykka til!

I'm sure the price varies a lot. With this doctor it's $250, another one in the same city was $235. When I did the medicals in Sweden for Canadian experience program I checked with three different ones, and it went from around $570 to $260. If there's several choices of doctors you should check with all of them!

In the US my husband paid about $400...it really depends on where in the world you have it done. It can vary greatly between cities in the same country and even Doctors in the same city.
