Impossible to tell, unfortunately. There is no set time that secruity checks take, IF he is even selected for them.
As far as I understand it, background and criminality checks are standard, but an in-depth security screening is selective. This may be based on past travel history, military service (conscription or not), etc. You only know if that's happening by ordering your notes and seeing a lot of redacted activities in the activities section labeled 'security'. There is no set time as to how long this would take because IRCC is requesting information from 3rd parties.

Csq request and transfer to LVO (dakar): July 31st
Ecas changed to "we started processing your application ": August 8th
CSQ request granted: September 26
Prearrival services/ decision made on ecas/ppr: May 10th

Not in all cases. I have gone through the one year mark for my wife's application an dhave ordered GCMS notes several times. Up untill the end of april, 9 days before the year was up, this is the status:
Eligibility: Not started
Criminality: Not started
Security: Not started

No updates. Nothing has been done in 12 months
that is exactly what our application is at,in 2 week's it will be one year, and not one thing has started,I was thinking the same thing,a whole year almost and nothing, except for medical passed

The last notes ordered were April 24th, May 5th and I just ordered today as well. I called the MP's office 1 week before the 12 month deadline. I was told they started criminality on the 24th of April, but the notes do not reflect that. I am hoping the May 5th notes will have more info
