Thanks a lot GoonerClank for the info :)

Yes, I think these things will be of great help for us-first time immigrants...

Hope we could hear a lot from those who landed already for some tips and information about their experiences when they landed...

abscott :)

It really depends on where you land... Canada is huge and a lot of these services are community based or provincially funded.

Other places that can help...

Local community center (if you have one)
Local church (there can be people you can meet there that can help or guide you)
Services Ontario (if in Ontario or equivalent in other provinces) or Services Canada locations... Don't be afraid to ask.
-- http://www.ontario.ca/serviceontario - website for service Ontario
-- http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/home.shtml - website for service Canada
Local public library
YMCA/YWCA
Local city may have programs too - check out their website

Once you get a SIN number (Social insurance number - Government ID), in Ontario, you can go to the Employment Ontario http://www.tcu.gov.on.ca/eng/employmentontario/ location and they will help you look for a job. I am not sure about other provinces.

a basic site for jobs searching : http://www.jobbank.gc.ca/prov-eng.aspx?RchJobType=Reg_jobs&OpPage=50

Hope this helps others.

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR NEW IMMIGRANTS COMING TO CANADA ESPECIALLY ONTARIO. PLEASE MAKE SURE TO APPLY FOR OHIP THE 2ND DAY AFTER YOU ARRIVE OR ONCE YOU ARE ABLE TO OBTAIN A CANADIAN BANK ACCOUNT.

OHIP NOW COUNTS YOUR 3 MONTHS WAITING PERIOD FROM THE DATE IN WHICH YOU APPLIED NOT THE DAY YOU ARRIVE.

MADE THAT MISTAKE WITH MY WIFE... SHE ARRIVED FOUR WEEKS AGO AND JUST LAST WEEK WE DECIDED TO APPLY ONLY TO FIND OUT THAT WE HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL AT THE END OF MAY FOR THE HEALTH CARD TO BE VALID.

OHIP=Ontario Health Insurance Program. Every province in Canada has a Health Insurance Program.
Check on the province you will be living in when process complete. Google it.

Hello Manila applicants,
I am the sponsor of my wife in the Philippines and we applied in January 2014. Our application is going smoothly but there is suddenly something that worries me.

So here's the issue: My wife is coming from a poor family and she is still living at her parents. The problem is that they are living in a compound within metro Manila which is "squatters place", they are coming from the province. So this means she don't really have official address. No door number. I've put in the application the closest street name and city.

So my question is: Will the VO need to send her some paperwork? How to make sure she will receive if ever they send something through mail? We included her email address in the application.
Thanks for sharing your experience.

Hello guys, please enlighten me...

What do you mean by "APPEARED INTERVIEW WAIVER MAYBE WARRANTED" ? Just got our gcms notes and that was stated in the last part. Is it possible for me to have an interview? it also says eligibility is in progress, security and criminality not started, medical passed. There is a due date stated January 12,2014.

Thank you..

I think it means Interview will waived pending further checks.Still might be called for interview.
Did CEM request anything? Due date I believe is the bring forward date, time they allow to send in requests.

From what I've observed on forums, if e-mail address provided that will be the preferred mode of correspondence from CEM.

Thanks for the response step,

They only requested original passports and appendix A last November 2013.. i hope no more interview for me. I easily get nervous.

You should be fine, they are leaning towards waiving interview.
If interview called go into it with confidence, no reason to be nervous .
Good Luck

As step already answered the OHIP question i'm also going to enlighten you with regards to the three months before OHIP.

.. there are family community clinics accross Toronto/ and greater Toronto area that you can use for medical check ups or for prescription drugs just in case you decide to not buy health insurance to supplement the three months wait for OHIP..

The family community clinic provide the same care as regular doctors that you use ohip.. visits to the doctor cost between 50-100 dollars and more if you decide to impregnate your wife LOL!

. Canadian language equivalency test.

As gooner says , you don't have to take it buy many of you but once this test once taken in ymca/ywca it will give you access to free programs while waiting for a job.
It allows you to get your feet wet as to how the canadian job market works and meet people who are going through the same experiences as you.

(this is applicable to people who are being sponsored not to new landed immigrants (the ones who came here on their own terms) as you guys may want to work right away)

My wife registered in this programs and she tells me its great because.. it teaches resume writing, cover letter writing, and brief over view of the Canadian landscape, culture and its people.

So while i'm working, my wife is busy going to this programs and meeting new people just like her who are starting out and are new to Canada.

I'll share some more things with you guys as I find out.. but this is what I know so far and its working for us
