They force everybody to remed. While CEM can extend medicals up to a year beyond their expiry there doesn't seem to be any effort on their part to do so.

Just a observation, would like to get the opinions on it form some of the people that have been on here a while. Looking at the Manila VO spreadsheet there seems to be a steep drop in the number of apps after November 2012 (with the new rules). Does anyone know if this trend is similar with other VOs?

Does it mean that there could be a possibility that they wont ask for a remed? Im just a bit confused coz I thought that they could only give 3 months extension.

They can give a year extension only for the first three months after expiry and only if it's the only thing stopping VO from issuing a visa.

That may only be a direct reflection on forum activity since we do not get every single applicant to join here the real numbers of applicants per month is known only to CIC.

When I was going through everybody's old posts to help Scos update the spreadsheet, I found some interesting posts about medical extensions. Around the time that CIC made the new rule about medical extensions, it seems like CEM was trying to follow those rules. However, they found it to be even longer to extend it then to get a whole new one. Somebody posted an excerpt from their GCMS notes where it said they were trying to extend the medical.. and finally a few months later CEM just asked for a re medical. It wasted a bunch of months on their application time because it was the last thing standing in the way of their visa. I think CEM found out pretty quickly that the medical extension route would not work for them.

I think it's possible people find the forum later when their application has been in for awhile and they are still waiting for news. I think that's why the summer months look so high in numbers, although there may be a busy season for CIC, who knows.

How is it possible that extending the medicals add time to the process? By extending the medicals then they can just proceed to complete the application.

Its my understanding that the officers makes that determination to extend them. Do they have to get that approved from higher up the chain of command?
My issue is simply based on cost. The basic cost should be the same for everyone. Documents that have expired due to their inability to meet the volume should be automatically extended unless the originals are questionable. By not extending the medicals they are asking us to pay for their incompetence. Having to pay more to get your visa processed faster is extortion.

Thanks Steph and CJG, I was thinking that may be the case, but to see the drop off at Nov 2012 when the new rules came in just made me wonder.

What rules do you mean?

I'm not sure why the new rules would matter. There is such a low number of MOCs that CIC have to pluck poorly administered application to give the appearance that applications are heavily scrutinized.
I believe that the majority of applications are legitimate so the two year probation is really meaningless.

New Rule for Spousal Sponsorship

Two-Year “Legitimate Relationship” Regulation (October 26th, 2012) -

I thought the sponsorship length to 5 years was introduced at this time but it seems that it was earlier. Last paragraph of the article.

Yeah I agree with you. I just found it odd that the spread sheet dropped off at the point, probably reading to much into it... maybe hoping too much that everyone's apps will get resolved quicker.

Its specific to those couples who have no children and have been in a relationship less than a year. I'm not opposed to it at all. In fact I would raise it to 5 years.
