I had a question I know that I am not allowed to leave Canada while my application is being processed but my wife and I want to visit Toronto and see Niagara Falls but they I heard require a passport. Would that be considered leaving and coming back? Because sometimes when we drive down from Winnipeg to Minneapolis the immigration officers do not stamp my passport or do anything. Would that still be considered leaving and coming back? Because I don't want to void my application and have to do it all over again. Please advise thank you

If you are not driving across the border and you are not leaving Canada, then you will still be in Canada and therefore not need a passport. If you cross the US/Canada border then yes you do need one.

And why would you need a passport to visit Toronto and Niagara Falls...they are both in Canada...unless I am missing something here and the rules have changed :)

If you want to see Niagara, I suggest you stay on the Canada side anyhow, much much better view :D You don't need a passport if you don't leave the Canadian border. Yes, going into Minneapolis is leaving/coming back because you are crossing into the US. No, they don't stamp your passport, however, they COULD deny you re-entry upon your return to Canada if you get a CBSA agent with an attitude.

Uh oh...better be careful. I made a similar comment in another thread and took some heat (and a -1) for my comments.

Well, if they don't like hearing the 'truth' of what could happen, then I guess I'll take the hit rather than lie and tell them something that will make them feel all warm and fuzzy inside LOL

What sammy said. You don't have to leave Canada to see the falls. The better view and nicer surroundings are on the Canadian side.

In the event you really want to visit the US, I frankly wouldn't risk leaving Canada and jeopardizing an inland application for a little tourist trip. But that's just my opinion... And yes, it will certainly be considered leaving and coming back if you exit Canada.

There's always some chance you won't be allowed back in if you leave. So it really comes down to how comfortable you are with that risk.
