hey forum family, hope everyone is enjoying there weekend. I have a little random question
for you guys. Tax season is just around the corner seeing that my husband is not a resident do i have to include him when i file my taxes? what are the pros and cons?

Evening folks!

BIYTC, it is best to update your status with CRA as soon as you can after you get married. I believe all my husband needed initially was an official copy of our marriage certificate when he went to the office. He filled out a form or two and they took a copy of the MC, and that was it. He was requested to present proof of my income and taxes paid since 2009 when he filed his taxes in 2011. He has been filing my income as his "world income".

The upside that I know of is that CRA made no adjustments to his tax return based on the inclusion of my income, since he changed his status to married immediately after our marriage on his return to Canada. The downside is I have a friend who did not change her status until more than a year after her marriage and she was told she had to pay $200 in penalties for not updating the information immediately, because they had to recalculate her taxes going back 2 years to ensure there were no over-payments based on her marital status.

Best, you have to file as married,it's the law.. it will only benefit you as you will get additional tax credits, they do not consider his income as he is not here nor does he have a social security number! I filed my taxes already and it worked out perfect.

well it's officially 6 months that I filed my paperwork!! ohhh I so miss Hubby.

In regards to taxes, I changed my status in writing, I didnt need to show proof I just wrote a letter stating that I was married to xxx and that my husband is a non resident and has never entered Canada. I have to declare his world income, every yr. Also in the letter changing your status, you should declare his past 3 yrs income. Basically even the yr before you were married and current yr and so forth. Then you can file your taxes normally BUT, you may have to again send in another letter declaring his 2011 world income. If you mail in your tax return just put this letter on top. I havent had an issue except it delayed them issuing me my last installment of a one time tax credit that the had issued last yr in 3 parts. But I eventually got it. My child tax credit, gst etc stayed the same. But I had sooo much questions about it myself b4 I got married and even after...I didnt change my status right away..actually I forgot until about it about 9 months after I was married, but it didnt change anything, plus as I was told by Charlie n everyone, it is best to show that I file as married instead of single in immigrations "eyes".

Hi everyone!!!

Welcome to all the new ppl on the forum...

I haven't been on for a little bit... I been busy and caught another cold... I been trying to get better... Life is good for me and hubby... we are going to eat out at a restaurant tonight as tomorrow is our wedding anniversary but we both work afternoon so we are going to celebrate tonight I can't believe how time has flew by so quickly... Yesterday I was shopping with hubby for groceries and I was in an aisle, he was looking for something so I stayed at the one place waiting for him... I was looking around then when I saw him... I got butterflies in my stomach, it was like the first time I saw him come out of the doors at the airport... it was so weird... It was as if I wasn't expecting to see him there...

Someone was asking about weddings in Kingston.... we got married in Kingston we had the ceremony at a baptist church on Mannings hill road (I forget the name) we then had a reception at Four Seasons Hotel... it was beautiful and affordable... Hubby and I looked into going at the Grand Palladium resort to get married but we would of had to pay for day passes for the people who were coming and not staying at the hotel which made it super expensive... I don't remember exactly the cost of the day passes but we would of had to pay for day pass+meal for reception. We had 70 ppl that attended our wedding which approximatly 55 people were from Jamaica so it would of been way to expensive for us to do it that way.

Someone was asking about the lenght of time it takes... Hubby received his visa in 10 months but stayed in Jamaica an extra 2 months after he gotten back his visa due to his mom getting married 2 months later... so I was able to have hubby in canada a year after I sent the file to Kingston. In our case hubby did his medical after we sent the file to mississauga.

Congrats to the updates of those who joined love ones. God is good!
It has been awhile since I've last logged in. I don't have a computer or internet. At church right now using the computer. Nevertheless, I have my own update. I, too have good news. My husband received his visa and I will be picking him up tomorrow from Pearson. It's been a long stretch, but I am requesting your prayers. The road hasn't always been easy for us. At times, I have questioned his sincerity, but I leave everything in God's hands. God knows what best. I hope to hear further updates from others, especially Charlie D, who has been so instrumental during this process. God bless all in Jesus Name.
