1. You should apply for SOPW and it’s not an extension of your current WP
2. No, new rule only applies to PGWP
3. Usually SOPW will be valid for 2 years
What is your current work permit by the way? CWP? PGWP? OWP?
If I were you I will apply for SOPW right away.
Based upon the QA asked on IRCC website, its is showing me to fill out form 5710 which is for extension or change in conditions. As I already have a work permit, and under form 5333 it mentions that 5710 is applicable for those who are already in Canada and want to extend their stay as a worker. Please advise if I am getting wrong documents/checklist.

even you are having a work permit, if you want to apply for SOWP it will be a totally new one, 5710 is correct form in both case (extension or getting new one)
Google to see how to fill it

Dear Team,

I have a matter that I would appreciate your advice on.

I have submitted a spousal sponsorship application for Canada with the following details:

  • Application Submitted: September 11, 2024
  • Principal Applicant Status: Visitor Visa
  • Sponsor: Canadian Citizen
  • Acknowledgment of Receipt (AOR): October 27, 2024
I received the AOR on October 27, 2024, and I am now planning to apply for a Spousal Open Work Permit (SOWP). Once I log in to or create my IRCC secure account, I will need to answer a few questions to obtain a personalized document checklist. One of the questions is whether I have completed a medical examination. They have also provided a list of designated physicians for this purpose (https://secure.cic.gc.ca/PanelPhysicianMedecinDesigne/en/Home).

My question is: should I complete the medical exam and submit the results with my SOWP application, or is it advisable to submit the SOWP application first and wait for IRCC to request the medical exam? Would waiting for the request potentially delay the processing of my SOWP application?

Any advice or guidance you could provide would be greatly appreciated as I move forward with my application.

Best regards.

You should not do the upfront medical. You can apply the SWOP now without the medical. As part of your PR, they will ask you for one soon. And the current processing time for work permits are 145 days. So this whole thing is a long process, you will be waiting a long time anyway.

Sponsor: PR
PA: Inland (PGWP)
Submitted: July 06, 2024
AOR: Aug 01, 2024
BIL: Aug 02, 2024

Then, I also received an update on the GC key account, saying it was an Invitation to Pre-arrival services on 8 August 2024.

Then, I didn't receive an update for a couple of days, and in the meantime, I applied for a work permit on 18 August 2024 which was approved on 27th Sept 2024.

Then I received one mail with a letter and inside the letter was something like this on 20th Aug 2024 :

Date: August 20, 2024
UCI: XXXXXXXXXXX
Application: XXXXXXXXXXX - INLAND SCLP
PA Name & Address

This refers to the Application for Permanent Residence you made under the Spouse or Common-
Law Partner in Canada Class.

It has been determined that you meet the eligibility requirements to apply for permanent residence
as a member of the spouse or common-law partner in Canada class. Please note that a final
decision will not be made until all remaining requirements for becoming a permanent resident
have been met. These requirements include medical, security, and background checks for you
and, if applicable, all of your family members, both in Canada and abroad, even if they are not
applying to join you in Canada at this time. You cannot become a permanent resident until you
and all your family members have met these requirements.
IMPORTANT: Passports for yourself and your family members must be valid for the duration of
your stay in Canada. If you or your family member(s) have updated your passport, please submit
a copy of your new passport as soon as possible.

I am not sure what is this letter about, Can someone please help to understand what is this letter about and what will be the next step?

What is more, I see my Eligibility and biometric is done on the application status checker Medical has not started and the Background check is in progress.
