Did you enroll in french courses Jolyn? My wife is learning on youtube videos. Im trying to convince her to take real courses but she says she is shy. I know that the Manila french alliance (Alliance francaise de Manille) is giving courses for beginners.

My husband struggled with keeping himself busy. With all the distance and being unemployed he fell into a deep depression (think of the underemployed Jason Segel in the 5-year engagement). Luckily, my Dad had a friend in his home country who was willing to offer him a job. That quickly got him out of depression and he's a manager now :) The job pays terribly but it keeps him busy and at least he cut his overgrown beard. Getting past the sponsorship stage was good for us too; I noticed he started to dream about his future again.

I think the key is to keep yourself busy, whether that's working or Zumba classes. Learning a new language or skill is a great challenge! In the grand scheme of things a year is not all that long to wait (assuming your application is standard) and it will be well. If you do plan to work in Canada, you may want to volunteer in your spare time so that you don't have a gap in your resume.

Hi,

Just found this forum and wants to join January 2014 thread.

I am a Canadian currently living with my wife in Hong Kong and wants to sponsor her to move to Canada. My outland sponsorship application was sent to CPC-M on January 20th and received AOR via email on February 26th. After that, I have not heard anything back from CPC-M so far...

Checking ECAS everyday and still shows "Application Received". Also tried to call the CIC call centre couple of times, but was told that my sponsorship application is still in process and there is nothing I can do except waiting. Just want to know if anyone has any suggestion for my situation? Or does it just takes longer for the case if sponsor is not currently living in Canada? Thanks.

Hi Doheny, congrats on sending off your application. There is at least 1 other person I know if in the same boat as you that applied around your time and has not gotten Sponsorship Approval yet.
I can add you to the spreadsheet - could you let me know when you did your medicals and what visa office you are going through?

Ah thank you. Just to clarify, did you send the application on the 20th, or was it received at the office on the 20th?

For those of you who are receiving or received the CSQ, you can study French through a Massive Open Online Course from the MICC, which is free and it is offered for all new immigrants. It is called Francisation en Ligne.
You can also study at the Alliance Francaise, and you should be able to get your money back for the months attended when you arrive to Quebec.

Francisation en Ligne:

I can help since my mother language is french. ;D
The course linked by huertdiaz is NOT a beginners course in french, hence the page in french. You are supposed to be able to understand already what is written there.
This course is aimed to the intermediate and advanced french skill levels. You can also take some specializations according to your field of work such as health and nursing, administration and laws, engineering and science.
Here's the general information in english: http://www.immigration-quebec.gouv.qc.ca/en/french-language/learning-online/index.html

It's truly a pitty I don't think I reach the level the Francisation en Ligne requires and that there's no Alliance Francaise schools up here in the northern Europe! I guess I'll have to wait until I get to Canada and take the courses there, though it would have been nice to learn it in advance so I could have a fluent conversation with my husband's family. They don't talk too much English and my French gets "fluent" only when I've had enough wine.
