I am guessing Canada will be the number 1 choice for such candidates, since Canadian immigration for those who qualify is a lot easier than most other countries. Secondly these applicants obviously would rather live in the US. They may think that proximity to the US will allow them to return to the US.

I am sure some are applying to Australia, NZ, but in very low numbers compared to Canada.

Nice post!

I am also observing this trend recently.I think everybody is trying to flee from US to protect them from a bad economy. But if so why Canada will allow these types of guest immigrants? Canada has a long term policy to establish their economy by immigrating skilled peoples. If they will fly away after few days when economy will regain its strength in the US then will Canada be successful in future? Canada should strict about these types of immigrants!

Thanks all.

well, its hard to say who will run and who wont run. One way is to restrict the people who made it to the US from another country but the cons for that is that most people who made it to the US is because they are some of the best from their country so why stop top people from going into canada.

Once people settle down and buy houses etc, it isn't easy for them to move back to US. The only reason why they leave US is not just bad economy but the whole citizenship/GC process. Canada will give them that security, thereby stop the reverse flight i think.

Good news for US immigrants!

America's recession "probably" will end this year if the government succeeds in bolstering the banking system, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said Sunday in a rare television interview.

So, be cool, have patience and nejoy yourselves!

Thanks all.

Many people on H1B visas in the US just take the PR from Canada and go back to US, they don't buy houses and keep on waiting for their US GC. Once they get that somehow, they say goodbye to the Canadian PR and never go back. Canadian GC is easier than the US and therefore they take this as insurance, not necessarily they like Canada that much.

That is their choice, but some really waste the PR and never go back and usually come back to US few days after the landing to complete the insurance. Someone needy could get that PR instead, who really want to settle.

Yeah, maybe Canada is being too generous with the 2 in 5 years in Canada that you have to stay to keep it. It used to be 6 out of 12 months which should be enough time to tie up loose ends for somebody who really wants to live in Canada. The US GC you can lose at any point if they believe you have permanently moved to another country.

Take care.

For some reason some people (especially this category) think that it is better to live in the US, they spend half of their life chasing the US GC and waste Canadian GC and time, once they get US GC they are already too old. Point is, they take Canadian PR as granted and don't utilize it, instead chase something which will give them almost the same privileges as Canadian PR. Later they get refused, they come back to Canada and start counting the days they need to be there to keep the PR status.

Yes New Yorker its really interesting and pain taking. Are they knowlegeable about their such kind of acts which are destroying the scope of others everyday?

Canada has the statistics of immigration numbers which they are issuing every year. Is there any statistics how many peoples are loosing/leaving their PR every year or leaving the country for good? If they have such a record, then the immigration minister may add some new nembers with the existing to refill the vacuum. Then a big percentage of new immigrants can be helped in this way.

Thanks all.

Because they don't have concrete records on when people leave, only when they come back, they probably don't know for certain how many people have lost their PR's already. Many people still get back into Canada unnoticed when not meeting the residency requirements, then find out when they try to get their PR card renewed that they have already lost it.

Canada is a good backup for PR for H1B holders in the US only for people born in India, China, Phillipines and Mexico - due to the immigration backlog for people born in these 4 countries - it usually takes 5 to 7 years to get a green card if you are born in these 4 countries to get US GC. But if you are not born in the above 4 countries - it should not take you more than 3 years to get your US GC since there is no backlog for all other countries. I am from Argentina and before moving to Canada earlier this year, we got our US green Card in 3.5 years in 2004. Most of my friends from South America (Colombia, Brazil, Peru, Argentina, Uruguay etc) have got their US green cards in 3-3.5 years - start to finish.

But from what I hear, Canada is also introducing biometrics from next year similar to what the US currently uses and so it will be easier to track who is coming in to Canada and who is leaving the country and when. It was in last year's (2008) Canadian Federal Budget and is slated for full implementation by 2011. Then it will be important to maintain the 2 in 5 year residency to maintain one's PR.

It is a back up for most of them. But I never applied for GC in my last 3yrs-3months stay in USA. As on H1, I have to work for my employers and their families to make them rich.
