Is this possible?

Hi everyone,
I think I'm starting to understand the process but I would like to run our plan by you guys to make sure we haven't missed any information.

My Canadian boyfriend is going to sponsor me, Dutch, under the common-law program (we have lived together for about 2,5 years in the Netherlands). We are planning to send in our outland (Vienna office) at the end of this year. The plan is that I work in the Netherlands until March-May and then move to Canada just as a tourist. First of all, is that allowed? What do you tell customs in such a situation? Do you get a return ticket (eventhough I wouldn't use the return part)?

We are thinking of trying to start our own family before I move there. I realise I won't be covered for any of the costs but I could maybe get a private insurance for that (we are too impatient to wait until PR is approved). However, would showing up in Canada pregnant cause problems entering the country?

Regarding the health care I'll have a 3 month waiting period (I'll be landing in BC). I am assuming this starts once I get the PR, assuming I'm in Canada. Basically I'm asking what is considered landing? For example, if I arrive on a visitor "visa" or perhaps working holiday visa, could I "land", before I get PR? I assume not but just making sure.

thanks in advance

It is allowed, but a lot of it is up to the border agent at the airport, not CIC. If they suspect you are moving to Canada, they may deny you entry, so it's your job to convince them that you are just visiting, even if you plan to stay there until you get PR. Showing up with all your possessions and no return ticket or ties to the Netherlands may raise a red flag, but it all depends on the agent you get that day.

Being pregnant shouldn't be an issue as far as I know, but you'll need to update CIC if you have a baby before you get PR, they'll need to add the dependent to your application.

You cannot land before you get PR, you can only visit. When you get PR you'll need to either go to an immigration office in Canada to "land", or cross the border and come back (called flagpoleing) to land.

Of course you can, but for sure, you'll need your return ticket even if you are planning not using it... So telling them you are just visiting. Also, you have to make sure to have a valid status in Canada from the beginning to the end. You're not going to be covered by the health system here neither, so I would definitively get a private insurance for sure. (I sponsored my Danish husband but we are living in Quebec... so I am not sure about BC.)

Get as much proof of a common-law relationship as possible (mutual banking account, a location contract, messages, mutual bills, photographs, and on...). But my husband didn't have a problem getting in Canada just by saying he was visiting me. He got a round trip ticket for about 17 days. The only difference for us is that we applied Inland... so there was no problem with the status.

You'll have to extend your visitor status every 6 months but that's pretty much it. If you are giving birth before your application is done being proceeded, you have to fill a form. (I am 39 weeks pregnant and tomorrow is the landing interview of my husband. He will get is confirmation of permanent residence. I was so scared to give birth before this appointment haha!!)

Good luck to you :)

Thanks for your answers.

Yeh I won't be looking like I'll be immigrating. I'll be starting to move some stuff when I go on a holiday later this year and also when my boyfriend comes to visit me so I shouldn't have too much stuff to bring when I can come and stay. I will consider getting a return ticket to make things easier (after Woona's reply it sounds like I'll definetely do that). I would love other people's opinions on that too. Thanks for clearing up the landing issue too.

Woona congratulations on both your husbands landing and you family extension! How much proof did you provide? We can show him being registered at my house, I own it so there is no lease. He also got PR here in the Netherlands. So far we don't have a joint bank account, we would have to postpone the application if we want to include that (we're not in the same country now). We do have lots of pictures also with our family and friends, plane tickets, proof of holidays we took with my family and obiously I'll include some of the email, whatsapps etc (although I wasn't planning on sending everything, it will be thousands of pages, just whatsapp from june till now was 1100 pages). I appreciate any imput on that too :)

thanks for the well wishes, hopefully we'll be where you are in the process in not toooo much longer

Hehe, thanks!

For the proofs... I am married so I did not have so many proof to provide, but we sent a whole lot of pictures with families, friends, some trip we made together (like bus tickets, plane tickets...), 3 letters of our immediate surrounding attesting that our relationship is genuine... and uhm I don't exactly remember the other details. But the biggest proof we sent were probably the wedding pictures and the marriage certificate itself...

But everything you wrote seems legit. I mean... if you have pictures figuring your friends, family and so on... that's a plus. Tickets from previous trips too... Whatsapp is also good. Don't print 1100 pages of conversation though... They will be crazy mad haha. :p If he is registered to your house, that is good as well.

But hopefully someone else can give their opinion as well.

The return ticket is a safe entry for sure. My husband moved his stuff from Denmark through his mom that is visiting us 2-3 times a year but he also moved a little of his stuff along with him for the previous trip he made here before we started the Sponsorship.

Take it easy :)

Haha I like the take it easy part. This process is so stressfull to me.. Eventhough we went through the PR application in the Netherlands, this one is much more stressfull.

We have also travelled together for 3 months (one of those with my family) and many seperate trips (1-4weeks) so I'm providing plane tickets for all of those. We will also get letters from family and friends (two notarized). When I browse the 35page document I've collected so far of picture, tickets emails and stuff I feel quite confident. But then I read people that do supply whatsapp conversations of each month etcetc, and that scares me.

My parents, other family and friends will be visiting too so they can bring stuff too :)
