He just recently received his temp SIN card in the mail. He was not working all of 2012 and 2013. Does it matter how long he has had the temp SIN number in order to file him on my taxes? I may go see a tax specialist in this case, as I do not want to do anything wrong or hinder anything regarding our application, I'm paranoid. This process has brought out a horrible nervousness in me lol

All regarding your tax questions:

My husband claimed me as a dependent on his tax return for 2013. I just landed at the end of December, but it wasn't a matter of needing to be landed. If your spouse has a SIN, even a temporary one, then use that number for filing taxes. If your spouse does NOT have a SIN, then contact CRA and they will give you a temporary number that you can use for filing taxes including your spouse. Whether or not they are landed is irrelevant for tax purposes.

If you can afford to have a tax specialist do your taxes, then by all means use them. My husband used them and I have NO IDEA how tax law works in Canada, but they were able to transfer over some of the retirement income to me and do return under my name which netted use another 2k return that we otherwise wouldn't have received. Yes, it is apparently all legal, and no it does not require me to now file a US income tax return because it is not taxable. *shrugging* You know what, I have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA what this tax accountant did, however it's above board so if you can afford a tax accountant, do it. LOL

*goes wandering off to read some on Canadian Tax Law*
We filed our income tax 2 weeks ago via a consultant. We brought our marriage cert and showed him, asked for my SIN and told him of my situation. He was able to file me as a full dependent as i have been here for almost a year. I have never worked here. Then left my SIN blank , told me to come back when i have my SIN so he can file mine even if zero income just to formalize/legalize everything.
Hope this helps.

If you don't mind me asking, was the consultant expensive? Compared to like an H&R Block lets say?

Hi Guys,

I am new to this and I was wondering if any of you could help me.
We sent in the application for my wife last year and got AOR 29-Oct-2013.

My question is regarding taxes, I am ready to file my taxes but since my marital status changed from single to married, the applications asks for my wife's SIN number, but she does not have one.

Can I just send the application without her SIN number?

Does any one know?

Thanks!!
You do need to contact CRA of your change in marital status. If you are just claiming your wife as a dependent with no other deductions from your wife (i.e. - tuition credits) you can just leave the SIN# blank and file the return that way.

Hmmm...Good question.

I know your husband only recently received his OWP, but what was his status for 2013? If he was without status, I wonder if you can claim him as a dependent, since he may not have been `deemed' a resident, per se.

Also, if you can claim him, you would need to show his world wide income (even interest payments, or investments, etc.) if he earned anything in 2013.
I did this recently. If the dependent has visitor's status they are deemed a resident for tax purposes. I'm not sure what happens if you are out of status. Though you do need to contact the CRA to inform of your change in marital status and fill out a form.

The dependent does not necessarily need to fill out a tax return if they had no income for 2013.

That's not true! Even if you don't have any income, you should file still.

Guys,

As u all know my application is in process..... My husband declared me as his dependent last year and this year too. It does not matter if I have SIN number or not cz m a dependent. Also, last year we received a letter from CRA requesting for my world income and it was sent to them without any problem. Last week applied for his taxes, and since I don't have a SIN no. Still , it was left as 00000000 .

And the consultant did not charge much too.

Hope that helps.....

If you do not have income you don't necessarily need to file. You can check with CRA.

it is simple to phone Revenue Canada. There is a department that deals with this. You fill out a forum with a notary. the cost is the notary. Revenue Canada said it was a good idea to get a temp SIN because it takes some months to generate the SIN and then when you get your permenant one they just role the information into the new SIN. This apparently is quite quick. he suggested everyone should apply for a Temp SIN right away so your first year filing for returns the process would be quickier.
