Hi all,

Heres my latest news: Had my medical and that has been sent to CIC. However had the dreaded call from the doctors office - they wanted to discuss something with me!

Turns out there is something showing on my chest x-ray and to quote the doctor 'CIC will want that investigated'. So an appointment has been made with a specialist on Feb 6th. It's going to cost $200.

There is some good news in this story though. The doctor just made a passing comment that some do have their medical card at this point in the residency process.

I checked yesterday on the Ontario health site. It seems that as CIC have said yes in principle and I have a work permit I can get Ontario health coverage!

Went today and in 10 mins I had a health card! Woohoo! No consultant fee now, and I can afford to get sick lol.

So for all of you who are in Ontario: AIP and a work permit = Health coverage!

Cheers all
Col
Those news I like ! But I'm not sure if alberta health care works the same .

I agree. I wouldn't be surprised if July and August apps start hearing by the end of Feb at this pace. CIC literally went through four months of applications in one month !

Hope all goes well at the specialist appointment! *fingers crossed!*

My husband just went and applied for his health card last week. Received AIP November 13th coverage kicks in Feb 13th. We are in Ontario as well. Just a reminder to everyone that healthcare will kick in 60 days after you've received AIP. You can still apply for the card, but its only valid 60 days after the date on your AIP letter.

is that countrywide? I am in BC, does it means I could apply to be added to my husband health care only after getting AIP?

For BC, you may get covered once your file has been received by CIC.
Check this link out:
http://www.health.gov.bc.ca/insurance/msp_register.html

A spouse or a child of an eligible B.C. resident may also be deemed a resident provided that an application for permanent residence status has been accepted for processing by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC), and the application remains active. For more information, see Covering a Spouse or Child who is an Applicant for Permanent Resident Status in Canada (PDF 177K ).

OMG!!! Could this be true!!!! I am so excited!!!!

Happiness all around! :D

but now that I've celebrated for a few days. I still need to renew my passport and send a copy in.

My special circumstance is that I was a failed refugee claimant before and CBSA has my passport (which expired this month).

My AIP letter said that I should renew my passport and send them (CIC) a copy of the renewed passport. I'm not sure how I can renew my passport when I don't have the old one. Has any body been in a similar circumstance? Should I contact the Call center?

Family class applicants for spouse/partner/children are "excessive demand exempt" so unless it's TB (which is a threat to public health) it won't ultimately impact your application for PR. If it is TB, you'll have to undergo treatment before they sign off on your medicals. While I certainly hope it's nothing more than a shadow on the chest x-ray, if it is, you won't be barred from becoming a PR.
