Can anyone verify this either way: Once you receive the AIP (at the end of stage 1), but before the end of stage 2, can you leave and return to Canada safely?
If you applied inside Canada, it is not safe to leave Canada so many people do recommend to wait until you receive PR card (can apply an open work permit).
If you applied outside Canada, you can leave whenever you want (can not apply an open work permit).

***These are the different between apply inside and outside Canada***

Lots of people here have done that and was able to return with no problem especially with a work permit or any type of visa, but there is no guarantee that you can return with no problems. It is advised not to travel outside Canada till the application is completed. If it is not that important I would suggest not risking it .

Same here...just checked the inland applicants for 2012 and December 4th just received his AIP. Guys the saying "Patience is virtue" is really applicable to our situation. Just hold on tighter and ours will be at our fingertips soonest.

No clue. But I know my husband was able to claim me as a dependent before AIP and without an SIN, temporary or otherwise. And Québec was able to charge me $200 (despite me never having earned a dime in Canada) for the privilege of not using their health care, haha, all without an SIN.

Hi here,

Are you saying he was able to claim us a dependent at work? If that's the case, I would run and apply for it today because I am still paying tax as single despite having two dependents.

Please advise

Just another point ACS.....

If you've been in Canada for more than 180 days you do need to fill in a tax return, hence the need for a tax number as you have no SIN

I have an expired SIN from my past work permit. But does that still count?

I'm not sure whether we are listed as common law or not on our tax returns.. Trying to figure it all out with them but it's tough :/

I'm not sure about work. My husband is military, so we kind of live in our own weird little federal world.

Hi linea
I'll tell you what I know :)

You need to report to CRA as soon as you become common law or married. (within the next month after becoming so) You can do this easily online by logging into the CRA website or submit it by paper. I heard that you and your partner will get taxed heavily if failure to do so.

And I think if you have a temp SIN (starts with a 9) then that will be your SIN until you get a permanent one after landing. It doesn't matter if its expired. However, if you get hired, and an employer did a SIN check on you (and they should, but some small companies are too lazy to so..) then you're not allowed to work with an expired SIN.

Oh lordy. Now I'm panicking. Hubby and I didn't register that we were married in January with CRA because we thought that you just opted into the "Married" option when you were filing your taxes at the end of the year. I'll have to get on the horn to CRA today... :(
