Whilst looking on the "Applying for Temporary Resident Visa IMM 5256" page on the CIC website under the question "Can I work or study during my stay in Canada?" it states "A temporary resident may also take a program of study up to six months duration without having to obtain a study permit."

Has anyone here ever exercised this option or know anything about this? This is the first I've soon about this, and I'm pretty excited because it could give my partner something to do whilst waiting for his OWP to be approved. I'm assuming it doesn't mean that you can do six months of a more than six month program, but you could do something like open studies or academic upgrading to get you part way to a certificate or degree or whatever.

Thanks.

Yes you can study for up to six months on a visitor visa, when I called CIC to confirm this they said the course can not be longer than six months and can not be part of a larger course where apon completion you obtain some kind of certificate. I am assuming this means if you have 6 months left to complete a degree you can not come and complete it in Canada to obtain a Canadian Degree, but I could be wrong. If you go to the institute that you are interested in studying for they can tell you more about which courses you can take and which ones you can not. What courses are you interested in. From what I understand if you are interested in ESL this is ok as long as you don't go over the 6 month limit. Also if you go to a college or University they most likely will not let you enroll for the courses that require a study permit with out Citizenship, PR, or a study permit.

You can also apply for a study permit with your PR application which will be granted with AIP, or apply electronically after receiving AIP. Just remember that if you wait till you get PR your tuition fees will most likely be cut in half. Another thing, If you are planning on ESL courses, in most provinces these courses are free once you get Pr.

Its so nice to know that the processing time is now quicker.
Hi JcY! I'm really happy things appear to be going faster!!
What is the problem with your form?! They asked you to send them that in your AOR?

Goodluck!! :D

Hmm... Looks like the AOR is coming in but I haven't got it yet although it is suppose to have arrived at CIC on Feb 9. Should I be worried? Like, should I be calling them or something?

okay.. this is strange. Hoping someone can shed some light..

We just got the AOR email yesterday, and today I get another email stating that our pr application has been transferrd to the CIC in VANCOUVER for further assessment and we may be contacted for an interview or to seek additional information or clarification.

The thing is.. we live in Ontario... is this normal?

That is strange. File transfers (when they need verification or interview) usually happen during normal processing time which is 6 months at the moment, and its normally transferred to your local CIC office. I would call the call center to verify.

I'm trying... of course it's Friday, and 4:30 (when i think they close).. have been on hold for over 20 minutes now tho...not sure they are going to answer...
...... as i was typing that last sentence they picked up.

OK.. here is what I was told by the agent.. Vancouver is the overflow office, and apparently it's normal and I need not be concerned.. IF an interview is required, the application will be sent locally and we would be interviewed here in Ontario. I asked about sending in an OWP to be attached to the application, and was told that it should be sent in to the Vegreville office.

Still... seems strange.. has this happened to anyone else?

Hi I am starting the application for the common law inland and almost all requirements are gathered except fro my kids papers in the Philippines. My questions are 1) is it a requirement for them to have a representative since I am away from them or its ok if its just me and no representative needed? 2) do they have to do the medicals or they have to wait for the immigration to advice them? 3) since my daughter is 8 years old and she is with the dad, what kind of custody I have to get ( sorry kind of confuse) and what other papers do I need to have to make sure that she can be here?....pls help thanks...

LANDED..........
Been here since 2011 - PR on 28/05/2015
Hi all,
A quick question about the OWP application.....

I'm looking at question 3 on the form: Application to Change Conditions, Extend my Stay or Remain in Canada as a Worker (IMM 5710)

Which box do I tick as I havent a job offer and will apply for jobs once I have my OWP?

In addition, as I didn't include the application with my PR application, will I have to pay a seperate fee for the OWP?

Thanks in anticipation.

Thanks Wolanila!

So, you can apply for a study permit and a OWP to go through when you get AIP. Is there any problem if you apply for both? And if I'm understanding you correctly, for fees, you'll still pay international fees until you get the full PR, not just the AIP? Correct?

It seems like it'll likely be better to wait then, but it's good to know.
