imm5533e question 4: American PR vs Canadian PR question

Ello! I am currently applying to sponsor my husband under the Spouse or Common-Law Partner in Canada Class.

I have a question about form imm5533e, question 4):

“Have you (the sponsor) previously been sponsored yourself for permanent residence?”

7-8 years ago I was sponsored by an ex for American Permanent Residence. That relationship quickly ended, we divorced and I have been back in Canada for the past 7 years and with my current husband for 3.5 years.

Given those unique circumstances I am unsure of how to answer this question about previous PR and haven’t found an answer anywhere.

At this point I am currently assuming to answer “yes” as the question does not specify “Canadian Permanent Residence” or other. I was planning to submit an attached letter explaining the situation as well to avoid any confusion.

If anyone has been in a similar situation or can offer any additional insight it would be much appreciated! I will be following and can provide more information if need be.

In this context I believe it ONLY refers to Canadian permanent residence. So I would put no.

I agree with the above comment. I think the context is for Canadian permanent residence. Becasue if you were sponosred by a spouse to become Canadian PR, you cannot sponsor a new spouse until 5 years after your became PR (landing date).

Since the PR sponsorship you mentioned was American, I don't think it's revelant.

I appreciate the response! That’s what most people I’ve spoken to with seem to think. I just really don’t want to mess this up (and at worst have them think I am lying).

I decided to investigate around the appendixes and glossary on the IRCC's webpage. I found the following definitions for a few words in the question:

Sponsor: A Canadian citizen or permanent resident who is 18 years of age or older, and who legally supports a member of the Family Class to become a permanent resident of Canada.

Permanent resident:
Related terms: Landed immigrant, PR

A person who has legally immigrated to Canada but is not yet a Canadian citizen.
For a more detailed definition, see the legal definition of permanent resident.

Given these terms within the glossary provided and the question asked, I am going to safely assume that it is in fact Canadian relevant terms only and going to answer "No" to the question. I wanted to leave this information here though for anyone in the future who may find themselves asking a similar question. I'll be sure to update in the future if anything comes up or better yet, all goes well and we obtain PR with no issues surrounding this!
