Hi all,

I'm currently trying to complete my IMM 5406 form and have become unsure on a point.

There is a area to put my spouse, however, my spouse is already a Canadian resident, so I am unsure if I should put her details in?

I've looked at the guide and it says the following:

"This form must be completed by:

You, as the principal applicant,
Your spouse or common-law partner (whether accompanying you to Canada or not), and
Your dependent children aged 18 or over (whether accompanying you to Canada or not)."

It also says:

"Write the personal details for your spouse or common-law partner, (if applicable)"

In summary, I am unsure if I should put my wifes details in (she is already a Canadian resident)?

Many thanks,

Ste

You mean Section A, 2nd box. That's where the spouse who is sponsoring the Principal Applicant, writes his/her name.

Ah! One more question! ;)

The guide gives the following directions:

"Additional family information (IMM 5406)
Who needs to fill out this application form?

This form must be completed by:

You, as the principal applicant,
Your spouse or common-law partner (whether accompanying you to Canada or not), and
Your dependent children aged 18 or over (whether accompanying you to Canada or not)."

Does this mean that my wife (Canadian citizen) needs to fill in the IMM 5406? So in total I have a IMM 5406 with my family on, and she has a separate IMM 5406 with her family on?

Based off the guidelines I am inclined to say she has to fill out her own IMM 5406, but I don't want to take any chances.

Cheers,

Ste

I've seen this question asked before, and I'm pretty sure only you have to fill out that form, the Canadian Citizen does not. If there's a senior member that can confirm this for me, that would be great!

Cheers Kelsey!! I did a search prior to posting but couldn't dig up anything.

Yes, that would be great if we could get re-conformation from a senior.

I'm not a senior member, but IMM5406 only appears on the document checklist under the Sponsored Person section so I would say you only need to fill out one and it goes with your documents as the principal applicant.

When in doubt, refer to IMM5491, the document checklist as well as the appropriate country-specific checklist.

The form itself says it has to be filled out by applicant and spouse...but on document cheacklist it states only by applicant.

I kept a copy of the document checklist and read through the Guide as I filled in each form. I also downloaded and printed off my husband's forms (he's the Sponsor) to see what forms he needed to complete so that I could double-check what was required of me, and to better understand what CIC are asking for.

You'll find that you end up repeating information on various bits of paperwork !

Thanks for all the input!

I agree it is confusing as the document check list states that the person being sponsored is to fill out the IMM 5406, whereas the IMM 5406 document states the principal applicant and the spouse should complete their own copies.

This is so hard, but I think I am going to stick to the checklist and just fill out 1 IMM 5406 for myself (I'm the principal applicant).

Hope I am on the right track!?

Cheers,

Ste
