I would not take that option. Once he leaves the US, he is subject to a 10-year bar. In Canada it is close to impossible to survivie as an illegal immigrant.

Agreed. The OP's overstay in the US is greater than a year. As soon as the OP leaves the US, the 10 year bar will kick in automatically. The OP's country of origin is irrelevant (visa exempt or non-visa exempt) - the 10 year bar still applies.
