Am I missing something. We intend to do them within days of each other.... since the medical is "the" date (year later expires/must land by then).


Is it other paperwork that needs to come in?
I just want to make sure that we haven't somehow missed something really important.

Well the medical needs to be done before you send in your application, you need the forms from the doctor to send in with the application. We did my husband's in May, same time we sent in his FBI request (not realizing it took forever).

Add - The doctor he saw said it can sometimes take up to 2 weeks to process all the medical data as well, so that is good to know also

FBI clearance must be submited as well, that takes up to 13 weeks.
Both the police check and the medicals are submitted with the Sponsorship app.
FBI clearance is good for 3 months and medicals for a year, from what I understand.

I guess our thinking was that we wanted to do it as close together, to allow us the most time incase something went wrong or we didn't sell our house, ect.

police checK? I don't believe I am required that - only ever lived in Wisconsin
FBI Check is in progress but I read this didn't need to be submitted with the application as long as we indicated it was coming later - and in progress.

The FBI is the only required one now, state checks are only needed as requested. A lot of people (including us) are putting them in for each state lived in for 6 months or more just to be sure they are not asked for and delay anything.

can_usa_97 - you are correct. It's best to have your medical done as close to the time you apply as possible. I guess some people don't realize they expire in 1 year and need to be current at the time of landing, and some other people have other circumstances get in the way of getting their application in as quickly as they'd like.

My husband's medical was done 1 month before applying, and I wish we had put it off a couple weeks and had it done just before I left Nigeria, since it took me 2 weeks after getting home to get the application together. I would've had it done sooner, but my husband wanted me well rested, as there was no sense it putting it together while I was jet-lagged and missing something important.

My husband did his medical at around the same time he got his fingerprints done... sucks that we have to wait for the FBI clearance to come back. Just means if the application takes too long to process he will have to go for another medical.

Way back in November 2009. My new Canadian wife and I started reading the specific forms and requirements for Family Class spousal sponsorship.

I started gathering all the documents. Call a DMP who scheduled a medial appointment in six weeks, I thought WTF, six weeks to schedule a medical checkup! I called around and was able to schedule an appoint with DMP in Toronto that same week which was in early December 2009.

Regarding security clearance, I thought I could just go back to the States and get a police report from my home town that I lived in for the past 20 years. But then realized that's not what CIC wanted, so I got finger prints for State police. Then realized that CIC wanted an FBI report. So early December I mail my fingerprints to the FBI..... 13 weeks later I got the FBI report back but my fingerprints were rejected. We went to Florida on vacation, and I thought I would have them redone there, but that didn't work as I had no idea where to go. After coming back to Ontario, I called several places and ended up going to Toronto to a professional fingerprinting service. I then sent those fingerprints to the FBI in April 2010, and am still waiting.....

I've been here 10 months since moving from the States to Ontario to marry and be with my new Canadian bride. I've not been able to work because I'm "Not Legal", and have still not been able to file for PR waiting for the infamous FBI report which could come any day....

Two weeks ago my new Canadian wife said she did not want to take the legal responsibility to sponsor me because I have not been able to support here since I came here. We have talked since and I think she will sponsor me. However until which time the sponsorship/PR application is actually filed she could change her mind again. In which case I told her I will have no choice but to return to the States since I will no longer have implied visitor status, and very little chance to (legally) work here in Canada....

So yeah I'm one of those that had their medical (exam) done six months prior to having any other legal documents submitted. Not only that but (I believe) the Canadian Immigration system is NOT conducive to new marriages. They put tremendous stress on families and marriages by either forcing them to be separated or making it illegal for the "foreign" spouses to support their families.....

I'm so sorry to hear your situation and hope that things are worked out easily for you.
We had similar struggles (though never not supporting the other) when my husband came here in 97 to the USA.
I remember when we first got married, family and friends thought and to this day even - think it's an easy process and for some it just is... (like my uncle & his wife back during WW2).

I will keep you in my thoughts that everything turns out.

My new wife has said that her closest friends have told her that I should just be able to get a job and do something. Implying that I should be (able and) willing to work even illegally in her own country.

I guess ultimately I used to think the same thing before moving here.

I don't regret for even a moment, coming to be with my new Canadian bride. However I do regret coming (moving) here under false hopes making a new life would not be this difficult.

Some visa offices will tell you not to do your medical until they ask you too.Its totally up to you if you do it before or you wait for them to ask.Your visa will expire on the date the medical does,is the reason they say wait till they ask for it.

Doesn't that depend on how you are applying for PR. Family Class requires that the medical and police check be submit with your application, otherwise it is returned to the applicant and must be re-submitted. However my understanding is that the Federal Skilled Workers PR process will ask for these things to be done at the proper time.

Yes but you are applying for PR under the FSW Federal Skilled Workers (right?), which has their own rules and time-line. Where as other on these forums are applying under Family Class which states that medical and police check be submitted with their PR applications.
