You would know whether or not you have been approved, because CIC would have emailed you the approval letter.
An Inland applicant receives AIP when:
1. The sponsor has been approved.
2. The relationship has been verified. At this point, the applicant is now [officially] eligible to apply for PR, even though they already have.
The medical and security/background checks are all part of stage 2 (after, AIP).
For a person that has problems with CBSA, getting AIP means that they can usually breathe easier. Once CBSA sees that an applicant has AIP, they usually back off until a final decision has been made on the PR application.
IF he truly has AIP, you probably don't need a lawyer.
