Hello All,

My parents are landed immigrants of Canada. They did landing on May 31, 2017. Now they want to go to India for settling up some things. I want to know for how long they can stay out of Canada. They want to go in January/February and want to come back in July 2018.

Can senior members please let me know for how long they can stay out of Canada in one stretch. Is there any criteria they should not stay out of Canada for more than 6 months.

Hope to get some answer soon.

Thank you

They need to live in Canada for 2 out of every 5 rolling years to keep PR status. That's the only rule.

Hi Scylla,

So they are safe to stay for 6-7 months out of Canada and then come back and they will not loose status.

They could stay up to 3 years outside Canada and still be fine.

As mentioned, they simply must be living inside Canada for 2 of every 5 rolling years.

Remind your parents to take their PR cards with them on their trip else they will have problems boarding a plane to come back.

Also staying outside Canada for months can affect your health insurance coverage which may be more important for older people. You should look into this depending on what province you live in. Losing your health insurance or having to pay the province back for service you used and then left the country for a large amount of time might alter your plans. A few months in not an issue.
