Help! Urgent marital change and passport update query!

Hello,

This is my first post here and I pray I find the right answer to my strange query. Though most of my questions are partially answered through other posts, a few questions continue to remain unanswered.

So here goes -

I received the Passport Request email from CIC on 2nd March 2016 and as instructed, I submitted my passport via VFS on the 3rd March 2016.

Talks about my marriage are currently in progress and will mostly take place between June - August 2016.

Since the dates are not finalised, I went ahead and submitted my passport to avoid the risks of rejection due to failure to comply with CIC's request (30 day submission window).

I'm aware that once married, it is mandatory to inform CIC about the change in my marital status before I land in Canada. And as a part of this process, I will have to resubmit my updated forms, submit my wife's filled forms, her background history, medical report and the other details as requested by CIC.

Question 1: What exactly would be the process to update CIC regarding the change in my marital status? After marriage, do I reply to the PPR mail I received from CIC or is there another Email ID meant specifically for updates such as these?

Question 2: My Medical checks were done in the month of September 2015. If my wife-to-be's background checks exceed September 2016 (one year past my medical checks were done), will I have to undergo medical checks again?

My wife-to-be will be renewing her passport post marriage as it is expiring shortly. While at it, she will update her marital status as well and thus, her passport will reflect my name in the "Spouse name" section.

Question 3: Is it mandatory to update my existing passport indicating the change in my marital status and my spouse's name as well? If yes, will this be an issue as my application has been processed on my existing passport number. And since the reissued passport will have a new passport number, what is the best route to take? If I have to renew my passport with these details and update CIC about it, how and when do I do it?

OR

Would it be OK to continue the application process on my current passport (one currently shared with CIC) without updating my Marital status and the Spouse details on my current passport?

I am very worried about these changes and what impact it will have on my PR status.

It would be great to receive any help/suggestion which will help me gain clarity on the same.

Thank you

Aaron

It is too late to change the way your application is processed now from single to married. Once you get your visa stamped, you will be able to land in Canada. If you get married in June, you will have landed in Canada. For your wife to come to Canada, will be through a different immigration stream, called family sponsorship.

Hi, thank you so much for responding.

There are forum members mentioning that CIC requested them to resubmit their stamped Visa to be cancelled in order for them to reissue a different one at a later point.

New visas would be issued once the spouse's background checks out.

Won't that be possible here?

I think best way for you is:

- land in Canada as soon you get back your passport, or at least before get married.

- get married.

- Apply for spouse PR (probably outland)

- Apply for spouse WP as pilot program for spouses applying for PR.

- Apply for spouse VISA when WP approved (I guess)

- after receive WP your wife will be able to go to Canada.

You can try to get your wife here as Visitor but there are some chances to be rejected if they are doubts about your spouse returning to her country after visitor period.

I believe you have hope!

Even after you get your PR visa and COPR, if you get married BEFORE you LAND in Canada I believe you can add your spouse. They get the medical test done and police clearance and they get PR along with you

Thank you so much for your replies. I guess I still do have some hope.

Also, is it mandatory for me to have my passport updated with my spouse's name once married or will the marriage certificate, pictures from the wedding and invitation cards suffice?

If I update my passport, it will be reissued with a new number.

Please advice :/

Passport update to include spouse's name is not required.

If I update my passport, it will be reissued with a new number.

Please advice :/

It's not mandatory as far I know.

If you're getting married BEFORE landing you must inform CIC about you spouse IMMEDIATELY, submitting later forms and requested documents

Hi Gregor, thanks for replying.

When you say 'immediately', do you mean immediately AFTER marriage or immediately NOW?

Because the marriage will definitely happen BEFORE I land.

Immediately after you get married. Make sure you get married and send in a CSE with proof of marriage and other documents to IRCC before your COPR expires. Else you lose your PR as well.

You should communicate immediately after marriage, CIC will request documents and forms, but request could take up to 30 days.

I would like to suggest contact CIC before marriage asking for documents and forms to have most of them ready to send, obviously wedding pictures and marriage certificate should wait after the wedding but you can fill the forms (sign date after the wedding) in advance.
