As I understand, she needs to have at least PR, in order to be a sponsor. They don't allow visitors to sponsor visitors.

The Damascus office currently shows UP TO 9 months to process applications, though could obviously be a lot shorter (or even a little longer), it just depends on the case. If it's straightforward, with lots of evidence, then you shouldn't have to worry much. This time line does not include the current listing of 41 days to process sponsor applications in Mississauga.

Hey mdalkhen,

You are correct, she needs to have PR status before she can sponsor you, and it can take up to 9 months or so, but possibly less. This is for outland, meaning you stay in Syria (but can come and visit as often as you like), while the application is being processed. If you want to do inland, the forms are separate, and you have limited rights (e.g. you an stay with your spouse, but may be unable to re-enter if you leave. If your application is denied, you cannot appeal). In my opinion, outland is the better way. It sucks being away from your sponsor, but good things come with time, and it gives you security if you need to continue working, appeal a decision, etc. And it's usually faster... WAY faster!

You and your sponsor do not have to meet any financial requirements. You WILL, however, have to undergo criminal background checks in Syria, as well as undergo a medical examination by an immigration doctor. The results of these will need to be included with your application, which gets sent to Mississauga, Onatario (for sponsor approval), and then forwarded on to your visa office (in this case, Damascus), where they will look through your information, the evidence you've included, and possibly have you come interview.

These forums are very helpful, so please feel free to post away and create new threads for various questions you may have.

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/fc.asp <--- check this site out.

You can see all the forms needed to be filled out. There are also step-by-step guides you can download. If you scroll down to the bottom, you can find them in various languages, if English is not your primary.

It's pretty straightforward, and as I said, as you and your sponsor are going through it, feel free to ask questions. If you aren't 100% sure about something, ask. It's better to delay sending it in, to ask questions, than to fill something out incorrect, and face problems during processing...

25 and 30 should not be a big deal. Now, if it was 25 and 40, it'd probably raise a red flag. If it was 25 and 50, it'd probably be outright denied.

I don't think you have to worry about a difference of 5 years. As long as you have evidence the relationship is genuine, you should be fine.

You and your wife-to-be can be married in Syria, or in Canada. It's your choice. You'll then need to fill out the forms for permanent residency (she has some to fill out as the sponsor, you have some to fill out as the applicant. the forms are on the link I posted previously).

You'll need to apply for your background checks as soon as possible, as they may take a while to process. You should contact the Canadian embassy in Damascus and they can tell you who to contact, as far as where to get the background checks done. Their website is as follows: http://www.canadainternational.gc.ca/syria-syrie/offices-bureaux/welcome-bienvenue.aspx?lang=eng

You'll also need to have a medical exam done, which you can find approved doctors in Syria at the following site:

http://www.cic.gc.ca/dmp-md/medicalinfo.aspx?CountryID=2000&CountryName=Syria

You'll need to come up with all the evidence you can find (pictures, letters, boarding passes for flights, shared bank accounts (if you have any), phone logs, lets of support from friends and family, etc), and include them with the application.

You'll also need to pay the fees associated with applying. In all total, it should cost roughly $1040, I'm not sure what that will come out as in your native currency.
