Hi guys,
Have a question. I came to canada a month ago as a permanent residence. I went to serviceontario to register for my health card. They told me that i can apply for healthcard but it won't be able to Cover me until three months are over.
But u know i should have some kind of insurance during this period.
Please guide me what should i do in this situation???

You can get travel insurance to cover you until the three months are over.

Many travel insurance companies will not cover you if you have already left (I had that problem anyway, it might be different depending where you are from and what is considered your "home" country). I used world nomads, and they had good rates for really basic coverage which was all I needed for a couple of months between work permits.

''Waiting for health insurance coverage to begin

Depending on which province or territory you decide to make your new home, you may have to wait a period of time before you are eligible for public health insurance. During this time, you should apply for temporary private health insurance coverage.

Private insurance companies are listed in the yellow pages of the telephone book, usually under Insurance. You must buy this private insurance within five days of arriving in your province or territory or insurance companies may not provide coverage for you.

''Private health insurance

Private health insurance is available for services that may not be covered under your province or territory's health insurance plan. These might include dental costs, private hospital rooms, the cost of prescription drugs, dental care, ambulance services and prescription eyeglasses. Some employers offer you the option to pay for extra health insurance from your pay cheque.

Eligibility

Ontario residents are eligible for provincially funded health coverage (OHIP). Generally, to be eligible for Ontario health coverage you must :

be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or among one of the newcomer to Canada groups who are eligible for OHIP as set out in Ontario’s Health Insurance Act ; and
be physically present in Ontario for 153 days in any 12-month period; and
be physically present in Ontario for at least 153 days of the first 183 days immediately after establishing residency in the province; and
make your primary place of residence in Ontario.

OHIP coverage normally becomes effective three months after the date you establish residency in Ontario. The ministry strongly encourages new and returning residents to Ontario.

This is well-known that OHIP (and most other provincial health care providers) have a 3 month waiting period. Even as a Canadian citizen I will have to wait the 3 months (I had to do it before when I was in the UK for 2 years). You can still take advantage of health clinics and whatnot, but you will have to pay for services. The only thing you can do is look into private coverage for the time between now and when you are eligible for OHIP.

Finding a doctor to see you in Ontario will not be hard at all (they like cash) stay away from walk-in clinics they charge 100 bucks before you even see the doctor plus 25 for my meds, My husband GP added me to the Family and we pay out of pocket for me to see him I have high blood pressure and needed meds it was 34.90 for the office visit plus my meds. I am currently here on a VR. of course accidents happen and I am trying as best as possible to stay away from those until I get landed LOL its just really hard to find a company that will take you on with pre-existing conditions. Good Luck!

For the first three months you have to buy health insurance yourself. Depending on your medical condition, you have to shop around to find the best rate for the coverage you may need (ususally goes from 10,000$ to 150,000). I found for my wife a coverage for 50,000$, and I pay 60.00$ per month or so. The medicines are not covered though, only the emergency and the hospital and doctor visits, which you have to pay then claim the money.

hope this helps.

Hi Marty,
Thanks for sharing this info. Would you please give me some starting points to ask for quotes? (i.e. company names, etc) Thank you!

A good place to start for basic quotes is http://www.kanetix.ca/travel-visitors-to-canada ("You have moved to Canada and are awaiting coverage under a provincial health insurance plan"). Compares several insurers at the same time to get best price. I've found for 1 person to get the most basic general health emergency insurance, costs around $50 per month.

On this website you will get a complete comparison with all coverage option and price for each insurance company. It is very handy and give you good overview of all offers side by side and details if you click on more info : http://www.visitorsinsurance.ca

My husband can't even get a fake number to get glasses, which my disability benefits cover. I'm not impressed with all the damn taxes they take, they put stupid restrictions on stuff like this.
