Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could suggest companies to purchase health insurance (obviously for not a lot of money) for myself and my 2 kids (2 and 4) for three months, as we are moving back to Canada and need to wait the three month wait time.
Is it a dreadful process, or is it as easy as signing a contract...and can i do it all online or is it better to do once we arrive.

Any information is always appreciated!!!

I'm sorry I don't have any information about insurance companies, I honestly saw it as a waste of money, since they will not cover pre-existing conditions and if you are on medicine it is pre-existing. I am on meds for my blood pressure and just paid out of pocket to see my husband's doctor he charged 34.90 for the office visit and when I explained to him I was going thru PR process but needed my meds while I was here he wrote me a prescription with enough refills for a year. of course no one expects to get sick and accidents do happen and having children can cause worry so I can understand wanting to have some kind of coverage. Good Luck!

If you have a major credit card oftentimes you can get a much cheaper rate through them. I wouldn't take any type of risk with two children, all that shows is irresponsibility. Have you contacted the Health Insurance Provider in the province you are moving to? Maybe they have a suggestion.

I agree with 'creampop', BUT you must evaluate for yourself. If you run to the doctor at every hint of a minor headache, other ache or pain . . . then YES you will need some sort of coverage. For me, one who has been to a doctor's office with an 'obvious' problem and had to walk out due to their 'lack of time management skills' . . . know that I can get by without it. Never say never (they say) but that's my two cents.

Where are you from? Depending on where you are from ,some bank accounts give travel insurance which can be extended to cover a 3 month period.

Hey Connie77,

I think taking an insurance for the "bad cases" (hospital etc) is a good idea, it's a bit scary not to be covered at all.
I have used in the past one that is a "traveling insurance" ( not specifically canadian) and it has worked well in the past for me, they reimbursed bills for medication and doctors visits when I got sick within a reasonable amount of time and the paper work was minimal. I have taken them again now, while I'm in Canada waiting, but haven't used them so far (and hopefully won't have to!).

You can check out http://www.worldnomads.com/ and you can get a quotation directly. They have different options for family etc. The one advantage is that they are flexible on the duration - you can choose 2 months initially and extend online for another month, or few days, if needed.

Just a personal experience - for what it's worth!
Good luck with the whole moving process,
Sweden

how is experience with BlueCross Canada?
Are they any good?
Seems a quote for 3 months is around $330 for 3 months for 1 spouse....until the provincial coverage starts.

From a Canadian POV, they are great. From an immigrant who is already in Canada POV, it's pointless. They won't cover you if you are already in Canada, which I find stupid.
