Haven't filed taxes in years... (Notice of Assessment)

We're just about ready to send in our application and I'm starting to get worried...

For the sponsor's employment section, I wrote that I don't have a notice of assessment because I haven't filed my income tax in something like 8 years. Then I go on to explain my work experience here in Thailand, how I have filed my taxes here, and how we have enough money to get by in Canada as we relocate.

I'm a bit worried about whether I should have filed my taxes and whether I should have a Notice of Assessment though. I've hardly been home or worked there in 8 years. I don't owe taxes. I have had bank accounts with a lot of money in them and never bothered to declare the interest because it just wasn't that much.

Does CIC just care that I don't have a debt to pay? Or is it possible that I have to go home and file all these little interest amounts before I can resend the application?

I guess we're sending the application either way but I wouldn't mind some peace of mind if someone knows about this.

Thanks

We were in a similar situation and no NOA was available. Just provided local taxation statement and a note explaining. No problem at all for us.

Hi there, I too haven't filed since 2013. So I wasn't able to provide NOA, however, I did submit my bank statements for the previous 12months, along with a letter from my agency that I have contract work with and a bank letter. I did that to show proof that I have income to support self and family and that I'm not on welfare or had bankruptcy. I'm currently awaiting sponsor eligibility letter. In the mean time they have requested schedule A and police certificate from my spouse.

The Notice of Assessment is really just so that they can see you were not receiving/currently on any social assistance. If you can provide proof of income alternatively it won't be a problem.
