Hi guys,

My name is Ritvik, and like everyone of ull i was excited to come to Canada and build my career, however till now all i can see is disappointment...I have an MBA degree from Mumbai University and have worked in 4 mncs in Mumbai, but still struggling big time to get a job...I graduated from George Brown College this year in International Business Management and it has been 4 months i have been applyng for jobs but trust me guys the situation is soo bad that you dont even get interview calls leave aside getting a job...

There are plenty of jobs in almost all sectors, but i have gauged one thing the employers and job agencies are not interersted in international students as we do not have any canadian work experience..and its not only me none of my batchmates have got a job yet..
I would have applied for at least 500 to 600 jobs (not exaggerating) and i am soo sick and tired now even to apply...

First as i was in George Brown College i applied at lot of places in Toronto, but its next to impossible to get a job in toronto as the market is damn competitive...There are like 100 to 200 ppl applying for 1 job....So i moved to Calgary with some hopes, but its been 1 month and nothings worked out....

All i would like to advice is ifffffffff and only iff ull have a strong financial background ull can gamble coming to Canada...People who are opting to come by taking loans like me its a huge risk u r taking for sure!!!!!!!!

I have seen most of the international students end up working in mcds and pizza huts....It all looks rosy and merry from outside but it sucks when it comes to get a corporate job...

I would recommend to definitely opt for courses which have a coop, atleast ull stand a better chance to get a job...

I wish somebody would have given me this advice when i was in Mumbai last year :(

I am not trying to discourage anyone of ull, but just telling d truth and the actual scenario out here.....

Best of Luck!!!!!!!!!!

what about quality system engineering or IT? Is the scenario same?
well its tad bit better from IT but very very difficult for business majors/MBA.....and it makes sense as an MBA u will be hired to make administrative /financial/ business etc decisions for that company but if u do not have canadian experience the assumption is u wont understand canadian business so which business do u think will take a risk to hire a foreigner to manage their company...being said that there may be some opportunities but its very difficult. Also its difficult in general because most immigrants do not have required communication skills/soft skills so u should count atleast 6 months towards job search .

+1 unfortunately

It looks rosy from outside though it's really hard to get job in your area of interest. if u are ready to odd jobs (companies are not offering full-time at least initially, you wont get full time jobs in starting so u wont have any benefits) despite having bachelor, master or even Ph.D. degree then u may think about.

Long story short, please dont come to Canada after selling land or taking loan from banks. though you are getting a good job (which is rare) or getting admission in a good university not college with some sort of scholarship then u should not miss.

This is my experience though i am not struggling at all here and getting decent salary. I came here on a work permit.

As a former International Student this is spot on

Unfortunately without Canadian experience no one is willing to hire you...... I cannot empasize the importance of experience.......

When I graduated in 2010 from my course no one was willing to look at my resume, I had to take a part time job in a call centre for a year. Magically at the end of the year, I started getting calls from all the companies that were not looking at me before and now I have a good job in my field.

If you are thinking of coming to school in Canada you have to remember that you will have struggle with menial jobs for a year or more after you finish your studies, to get that all important Canadian experience

This really set me thinking.....I feel I should have gone ahead with masters in cloud computing in Ireland, rather than a PG in a Canadian college.....my sole intention is to enter Canada because we got and lost our PR status long back (2004), by not being there even for a day in five years....

Well i forgot to mention one more important point...

Do try and opt for a 2 years course, so that ull can get a 3 yrs work permit which is atleast safe, i was keen on a 2 yr course but due to financial constraints and already having an MBA degree i did not....

The most disheartening part is companies are not even interested in hiring for basic entry level jobs...For eg even data entry and i have mainly focused on getting an entry level job because from the beginning i knew that the chances of getting a job at mid level or any senior level position is impossible.....

Anyways i will try my level best till the end.... :)

I agree with this assessment. It's really hard to find a job if you don't have Canadian experience.
Based on my own experience and the experience of my classmates and friends from other programs who graduated at the same time as myself from school I can say that:

1) More than 50% of them are not working on the field. Those doing survival jobs can't apply for immigration (as this experience doesn't count as skilled).

2) Since it was a 1 year program, not everyone got 1 year open work permit. It's random. Most got 9-10 months.

3) Some people bet a lot on the Cook program because this profession was on CIC Federal Skilled Worker program for a long time. Now this profession is out of FSW and if you want to apply under Canadian Experience Class you are ineligible. I know two people with more than 1 year Canadian experience as cooks that are going back home at the end of their work permits.

4) People spend huge amounts of money in education to end up discovering that things are not as they thought it would be.

I usually don't use my login to read on this forum but this one compelled me to write.

Firstly, I would say that its good that you realized that there is no such thing as "Great Canadian Dream". Life is as tough as it could get in any country (Even in your own). The fresh management\IT graduates in India also struggle a lot if there is no campus placement, you are facing the exact situation. No one would hire a fresh management grad if he\she is not from a good college or does not have "relevant experience". The colleges that have mushroomed here in India or any country for that matter are selling MBA degree just to make money for their own good.

Secondly, my suggestion for you would be to hang in there. I have seen many people waiting longer for jobs and eventually everything turned out well.

Like a good old saying:There are no shortcut to success, All that is needed is patience.

ALL THE BEST :)
